Kyoto Xanadu battle system

Nihon Falcom has revealed new details about action RPG Kyoto Xanadu, including four new characters and various battle system mechanics. As previously revealed, Kyoto Xanadu features 2D platforming action and 3D battles.

Get the latest details on the new characters and battle system of Kyoto Xanadu below, via Gematsu:

Characters

Lear Beresford (voiced by Rina Hidaka)
      • Age: 13
      • Soul Device: Floating magical tool types

The leader of the high-ranking team “Starry Night Travelers” and chairperson of the disciplinary committee, who entered Hirasaka Academy by skipping grades.

An agent dispatched by the magic society “Nemesis,” she hails from the prestigious Beresford family of England, which has produced “Chosen Ones” for generations.

She often offers opinions so grounded in reality that one would hardly believe she is only 13 years old, though she occasionally shows a more girlish side befitting her age.

Eliza Alcott (voiced by Nanako Mori)
      • Age: 18
      • Soul Device: Rapier types

A beauty in men’s clothing who serves as the assistant to Lear, leader of team “Starry Night Travelers,” as well as a member of the academy’s disciplinary committee.

With her elegant demeanor and gallant, butler-like presence, she has gained popularity among the female students.

Having originally served the Beresford family, she was dispatched to Hirasaka Academy alongside Lear.

Hosen Suruga (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto)
      • Age: 18
      • Soul Device: ???

The leader of the high-ranking team “Abyssal Investigators” and supervisor of Hirasaka Academy’s research facilities.

A member of the Suruga Group—one of the families that make up the international syndicate known as “Zodiac”—he serves on the student council this year as Zodiac’s representative.

He prioritizes his research above all else and has an extreme aversion to wasting time, leading him to resent even participating in the student council.

Luana Calderone (voiced by Yukiyo Fujii)
      • Age: 18
      • Soul Device: ???

A third-year student who serves as the leader of the high-ranking team “Nameless Fruit” and the head of the academy chapel.

A person overflowing with compassion and kindness, she actively participates in local volunteer work.

She is adored by many students, and some of her more fervent admirers even refer to her as the “Saint of Siena.”

Battle System

Kyoto Xanadu features a “Dual Dimensional” battle system that allows players to switch between 2D and 3D action. By utilizing special equipment known as “Soul Devices,” players can perform a wide variety of actions.

Standard Attack
      • A basic physical attack performed with your Soul Device.
      • Repeated button presses allow for a combo of up to three consecutive strikes.
      • Performing attacks in mid-air will trigger unique aerial standard attacks.

Strong Attack
      • A character-specific physical attack executed with your Soul Device.
      • By combining it with standard attacks, you can trigger extended attacks with effects such as increased damage against airborne enemies or area-of-effect knockback.

Dodge
      • Performs a forward dodge.
      • Dodging grants a brief period of invincibility, and allows you to slip behind certain enemies.
      • By acquiring abilities, you can unlock additional actions such as mid-air dodges and dodge attacks.

Jump
      • Performs a jump whose height varies depending on how long the button is held.
      • By acquiring abilities, you can unlock various extended actions such as recovery from knockback, wall jumps, and double jumps.

Shooting Attacks
      • Consumes the Shoot Gauge to fire a “Spirit Bullet.”
      • In 2D action, the firing direction changes based on the angle of the analog stick.
      • In 3D action, shots are fired toward the on-screen reticle.

Special Bullets
      • By acquiring abilities, you can use shooting attacks that differ from standard shots.
      • Special bullets vary by attribute, including homing shots (Fire), bombs (Wind), and laser-type attacks (Ice).

Guard
      • Hold the button to assume a defensive stance. While guarding, movement is restricted, but incoming damage is reduced.
      • Guarding at the exact moment an enemy attack lands will trigger a parry, completely nullifying the damage and significantly staggering the enemy.

Soul Accel
      • When the “Accel Gauge,” which fills as you deal or receive damage, reaches maximum, you can press the corresponding button to activate Soul Accel.
      • During Soul Accel, strong attacks are enhanced and parrying becomes easier, making it simpler to follow up with an “Issen.”

Issen
      • Successfully parrying a red, glowing warning attack will cause the Issen prompt to appear on-screen.
      • Pressing the corresponding button at the right moment triggers an Issen, which is a powerful counterattack that deals significant damage. Issen damage is further increased while Soul Accel is active.

Secret Arts

When the “Secret Arts Gauge,” which fills as you attack enemies, reaches maximum, you can unleash a powerful attack that damages all enemies on the battlefield. (This special attack can only be used during 3D action.)

Kyoto Xanadu will launch on July 16 for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam in Japan and Asia. 3D Fighting Game Starward is Coming to PS5

Starward

Century Games and Game Blender Studio have announced that 3D fighting game Starward is coming to PlayStation 5 on April 16. Fans can wishlist the PlayStation 5 version of Starward in the PlayStation Store

Starward is available for Android, iOS, and PC via Steam worldwide.

Here’s an overview of the game, via the PlayStation Store:

Starward is a 3D fighting game that integrates mecha girls and classic GVG combat gameplay, with 1V1 and 2V2 mode as the core gameplay. In Starward, players can control mecha girls with distinct personalities and different combat styles, and experience three-dimensional combat experiences beyond the ground.

Classic GVG-like Gameplay

Starward faithfully recreates the GVG gameplay that has been popular in Japanese arcade halls for over a decade. It includes actions such as Beam Rifle, Machine Gun, Charge Shoot, fighting, blocking, stepping, dashing, allowing you to quickly showcase your skill level.

The Starward experience spans across three distinct game modes featuring 2V2, 1V1 and Arcade gameplay. PvP is the main, featuring fast-paced battles lasting about 3 minutes per match.

Mecha Girls VERSUS

All characters are mecha girls, skilled in close-range fighting or long-range shooting. You can choose characters like Aliz, SkySaber, XiaoLing to play as vanguards; or characters like Elfin, Cavalry, Hikari to play as rearguards.

Each character has its unique design, such as Chinese style, elves, witches, fully armed mecha girls, and more.

The COST System

The character’s combat power “COST” is divided into four categories: 3.0/2.5/2.0/1.5. You need to allocate the “COST” of the team to achieve the most reasonable configuration.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok Beta Impressions – A Fresh Start

Granblue Fantasy Relink Endless Ragnarok Closed Beta Impressions

Cygames has really surprised me. I had no clue how much of a big deal they were in Japan, their country of origin, but when they released their first premium title, Granblue Fantasy Relink, it immediately caught my attention. After playing through the game, it left me wanting more as its satisfying combat and fun high fantasy story had me feeling like I was playing a PlayStation 2 classic that I hadn’t heard of. With the announcement of the DLC expansion Endless Ragnarok, I had the opportunity to play the beta for the DLC through the upcoming Switch 2 release of the game.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink initially skipped out on a Switch release but has returned in full force for Switch 2. This is a welcome addition to the Switch 2 library and feels like it fits well on the portable system. The pick-up and play gameplay of the mission mode feels right at home. Performance of the game is fairly stable, sitting at a solid 30 FPS most of the time. It can dip down in framerates when the action is particularly intense, and there are multiple graphical effects all going off at once. I’d say it’s comparable to the PlayStation 4 version of the game. It was a bit disappointing that there was no fidelity/performance toggle in the options that would bring it to the standard that the PS5 has.

What makes up for it, though, is the quality of the picture. The game outputs at a beautiful 4k resolution, which just makes the already fantastic art design of the game pop even more. The game also ran very stably in handheld mode and still looked fantastic on the built-in 1080p screen. While 60 FPS would’ve been nice, this definitely isn’t bad and showed me just how nice a game running on Switch 2 can be.

The Beta contains the game’s tutorial to teach you the controls and 3 missions in the game’s online mission mode. Online has been greatly improved primarily through the inclusion of crossplay between all versions of the game. Finding people to play with has never been easier, and the experience is as smooth as if you were all playing on the same platform. I never experienced latency or any sort of disconnection from the game. It’s all pretty impressive and really lowers the bar of entry for players to get their friends together and crush some bosses in style. The 3 missions included were 2 boss fights and 1 short linear stage. You have the choice of playing with a majority of the characters included in the base game and one new character: Beatrix.

Beatrix’s playstyle is not unlike that of a majority of the other hack-and-slashers you can play as, but her main difference lies in her unique “Delta Clock” mechanic. Delta Clock lets you cycle between personal buffs, such as raising attack or defense, by holding the attack button. Through doing combo finishers, you build up a meter that, when filled, activates a mode that increases attack speed. She fits right in with the other characters, all having an individual character mechanic that makes switching between all the playable characters so much fun. Once I played as her and later played through the missions again as some of my favorite characters in the base game, I was left a bit disappointed since that’s all there was to do within the beta. You do have the ability to mix and match weapons and sigils to find a combo that works with your playstyle, and there are mission ranks you can try to max out, but I was left wanting more.

There are other things to note in this beta, most notably the revamped menus and the added accessibility features the game brings, but overall, I was left wanting more. There are a fair few things to look forward to in the full release that I would’ve loved to get a taste of. There’s the new single-player content called “The Conflux” that sounds like it’s going to be a roguelike mode, the new skills and masteries characters can learn, more new playable characters, and the new summons that you can command. You tell me that a taste of the single player and being able to control a dragon wouldn’t make you more interested in the game.

At the very least, adding a few more missions would’ve been very nice since the ones we have now can be played through very quickly. The original game featured six different quest types; there could’ve been a great opportunity to contrast how each one has been changed and adjusted to stand out from their base game versions. From playing this beta, there’s not much I can see that couldn’t have just been added into the base game. While showing off the Switch 2 version is a positive, Cygames shouldn’t be afraid to let people get their hands on all the new stuff they’ve got in store.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink – Endless Ragnarok is something to look forward to, especially if you’ve played the base game. Those who have are going to be treated to more of that addictive hack-and-slash action, but for those who haven’t, this beta should’ve done a bit more to grab the interest of prospective players. Base game is always going to be there, but having that hook, that satisfying moment of being able to see what makes a major DLC stand out, should grab the admiration of anyone who plays it.

In an era of online multiplayer gaming, lowering the bar of accessibility is key. “Friendslop” games are able to thrive because of low prices and low hardware requirements on PC, and I think that if Cygames really showed off the crossplay capability of this game, they could have quite a hit on their hands.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink rules, and the more people play it, the better. The original game was able to sell over 2 million copies, and Versus Rising has managed to make itself a staple of fighting game tournaments of all sizes. We’ll just have to see how Cygames can pull people in when the DLC releases on July 9th.
