Halo: Campaign Evolved Split-Screen Requires a Microsoft Account

In a community Q&A on its website ahead of Halo: Campaign Evolved‘s release, Halo Studios revealed that a Microsoft account and Xbox gamertag will both be required in order to play the game. An account will be necessary for all aspects, including for local split-screen multiplayer. Additionally, players on PlayStation 5 will need two PlayStation accounts, alongside a Microsoft account, for split-screen.

Cross-platform multiplayer and progression are both allowed for via the Microsoft account. More specifics for each platform were included here:

    • XBOX Series X|S: If you’re playing split-screen on an XBOX console, the second player will also need a unique Microsoft account. If you want to play online co-op, you will need an active XBOX Game Pass subscription.
    • PlayStation 5: If you’re playing split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play.
    • Steam: If you’re playing via Steam, you will need to link to a Microsoft account.

UPDATE: In a follow-up post, Halo Studios stated that it “incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play.” It notes that, while players will need a PlayStation account for local split-screen co-op, it does not require a PlayStation Plus account.

Halo Studios revealed other details in the Q&A, such as:

  • The limited Collector’s Editions of the game are sold out, with no plans to restock.
  • There is no dedicated Photo Mode or Theater Mode, though cinematic screenshots will be achievable with in-game options.
  • Halo Studios has no plans for additional content or a demo.
  • There are no assassination animations.
  • The Mark IV armor is not available outside the bonus missions. Additionally, Spartan customization will not be visible in cutscenes.

Lastly, Halo: Campaign Evolved will release on July 28 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders are now live.
