SEGA has announced new adaptations for Crazy Taxi, Stranger Than Heaven, and Sonic the Hedgehog, releasing at some point in the future. Crazy Taxi will release as a theatrical film, while Stranger Than Heaven and Sonic will release on Netflix.
Dan Gregor and Doug Mand (The Naked Gun) will write the Crazy Taxi film. Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher, alongside SEGA’s Toru Nakahara, will produce the movie. Sonic will be a new animated series designed for younger audiences. As for Stranger Than Heaven, it will be a live-action film. Brandon Riegg, VP of nonfiction and transmedia at Netflix, said the following about the announcement:
“Great games already have what every adaptation is chasing — characters people love, worlds they know by heart, and fandoms that show up. With Crazy Taxi, Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven, we get to work across three completely different eras of Sega’s catalog, celebrating everything fans love, while introducing them to new audiences.”
Crazy Taxi: World Tour, the next entry in the franchise, will release in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC via Steam. Stranger Than Heaven launches January 15, 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam, and the game will be available day one with Xbox Game Pass.
The story of Stranger Than Heaven stars Makoto Daito (VA: Yu Shirota). He is a young Japanese-American boy from San Francisco who searches for a better life by heading to a ship bound for Japan. After being caught by Orpheus (VA: Snoop Dogg), Makoto heads to Japan and becomes his sidekick. He learns the tools of the underworld trades as he embarks on his journey. Later, Yu Shinjo (VA: Dean Fujioka), an ambitious and contentious fellow, joins him and forms a bond with Makoto.
Stranger Than Heaven takes place over five stages or acts in the following cities:
- Kokura, Fukuoka (1915)
- Kure, Hiroshima (1929)
- Minami, Osaka – (1943)
- Atami, Shizuoka – (1951)
- Kamurocho, Shinjuku – (1965)
Lastly, the game recently reached 1 million wishlists, a milestone which makes Stranger Than Heaven the most wishlisted RGG Studio game of all time prior to launch.
