Gameplay footage of what appears to be a full remake of the original Persona game, titled Persona: Be Your True Mind, has been leaked online. Final Weapon won’t be sharing any of the footage here, but we will be going over the details of what was shown, what this leak could entail, and its credibility.
The new gameplay footage centers around combat with the party members of Persona 1 navigating a dungeon in St. Hermelin High School, located in the fictional town of Mikage-cho, Tokyo, Japan. All of the characters, including the protagonist of Persona, have received new updated designs with illustrations. Tatsuya Suou, the protagonist of Persona 2, appears in the party, and there’s also a story scene.
It’s worth noting that most of what was shown is unpolished, as this footage for the Persona remake could have possibly been an internal pitch or concept video, similar to the one that leaked before the reveal of Persona 3 Reload.
Although leaks can be dodgy, there are many subtle details that lend to its credence. For one example, Eriko’s animations to be reused from Persona 4 Revival, a game that has not been released to the public yet. This also lends credence toward the footage being part of an internal pitch video and not a complete representation of actual development materials yet.
It’s more than likely that ATLUS has begun planning remakes of both Persona 1 and 2. Previously, when P-STUDIO director Kazuhisa Wada was asked about the possibility of remakes in recent 30th anniversary features and interviews, he said, “At this point, I can’t say for sure, but personally, I think it’s something we should definitely do. I think we have to do it.”
