Sony Interactive Entertainment has opened a new PlayStation history website to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the brand, which began with the release of the original PlayStation in December 1994. The website also revealed that the PlayStation 2 sold a total of 160 million units, despite the lack of sales updates for several years.
In comparison, the original PlayStation sold 102 million units, the PlayStation 3 sold 87 million units, and the PlayStation 4 sold 117 million units. Out of all these consoles predating the PlayStation 5, the PS4 is the only one that is still actively sold as new directly by Sony. You can browse and learn about the history of these PlayStation consoles on the website, including some of the most popular games of their respective eras.
Moreover, Sony is reportedly working on a portable PS5 console that will rival Microsoft’s new Xbox gaming handheld and Nintendo Switch and its successor, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. The new portable PS5 is years away from launch, and Sony may decide against releasing it, however.
PlayStation Portal sales also “exceeded expectations.” The device was reportedly intended to function as a standalone portable without the need for a PS5. Instead, the PlayStation Portal launched a Remote Play device, and the ability to stream PS5 games over the cloud without a console was finally introduced in the November 2024 update.
Sony is also in talks to buy the massive Japanese entertainment conglomerate, Kadokawa. Kadokawa is known for several anime franchises such as Bungo Stray Dogs, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Date A Live, and countless others. Additionally, they also own video game companies, namely Armored Core and Elden Ring developer From Software.
