Nintendo of America has announced that the 51st Maximus Cup of Tetris 99 will feature an Animal Crossing: New Horizons theme. The cup will start on January 8 and end on January 12.
If you unlock a total of 100 event points, you will get a new theme, featuring art, music, and Tetrimino designs based on Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo released Tetris 99 in 2019 as a complementary title with Nintendo Switch Online memberships. As the name suggests, the game is a 99-player battle royale with the gameplay of Tetris. Past Maximus Cups have featured art and music from Pikmin 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Super Mario Bros Wonder and more. Most recently, the 50th Maximus Cup gave players the chance to earn rewards based on Kirby Air Riders.
On January 15, 2026, the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Animal Crossing: New Horizons will release alongside a new free update. The new edition will add 4K visuals, the ability to redecorate and write messages using the Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, and a Megaphone which utilizes the Switch 2’s mic. It also includes the ability to play with up to 12 players at a time instead of 8.
The free update adds a resort hotel hosted by the Kapp’n family, the ability to craft multiple items at a time, invite guests using Amiibo, and upgrade storage size. It also features a dream world which allows you to create an entire island at will, and collaborations featuring LEGO items, plus characters from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and the Splatoon franchise.
