Sony Interactive Entertainment is working on a portable PS5 console that will rival the Nintendo Switch and its successor, according to a recent report by Bloomberg. This new console also aims to compete with Microsoft’s new Xbox gaming handheld, which is in a prototype phase.
According to the report, Sony wants to expand its reach and compete with Nintendo in the portable gaming market while countering a competing handheld from Microsoft. The new portable PS5 is years away from launch, according to sources familiar with the matter in the Bloomberg report. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Sony may decide against releasing it.
The source also notes that PlayStation Portal “exceeded expectations,” likely referring to healthy sales and user adoption. Originally, the device was initially intended to function as a standalone portable without the need for a PS5. However, the PlayStation Portal launched a Remote Play device, and the ability to stream PS5 games over the cloud without a console was finally introduced in the November 2024 update.
A Sony Group Corporation spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter when contacted by Bloomberg. It’s highly unlikely that Sony will comment on the portable, as its still a project very early in its development.
Sony is also in talks to buy the massive Japanese entertainment conglomerate, Kadokawa. Kadokawa is known for several anime franchises such as Bungo Stray Dogs, The Rising of the Shield Hero, Date A Live, and countless others. Additionally, they also own video game companies, namely Armored Core and Elden Ring developer From Software.
