Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki believes that PlayStation lacks original IPs, despite the brand having many dormant IPs that fans would like to see return on PlayStation 5, in an interview at Financial Times.
According to Totoki, Sony lacks original IPs that they’ve fostered from the beginning, including PlayStation games, films, and anime. PlayStation fans will likely take issue with Totoki’s comment on the games front, as PlayStation has many dormant IPs that have yet to make a proper return on PS5 with new entries. These IPs include Sly Cooper, Infamous, Killzone, Parappa the Rapper, and Resistance, to name just a few.
“Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning,” said Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki in the Financial Times interview. “We’re lacking the early phase (of IP) and that’s an issue for us.”
Totoki added that Sony has been better at finding new audiences for existing popular IPs. He believes that the company will not grow without creating original content for higher returns.
