Zhang Rang is the second and final boss you will face in the mission “The Fall of the Corrupted Eunuch”. His ability to clone himself can make him seem like one of the more overwhelming opponents of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. It’s no wonder why Zhang Rang can act as a roadblock for some players. However, with the right approach, this gimmick boss can become a lot less overwhelming.
Preparing to Fight Zhang Rang in Wo Long
The first obvious step you should take in preparation for Zhang Rang is to find every Battle Flag and Marker Flag on the battlefield. This will prevent you from taking more damage than necessary. What might not be so obvious is whether or not you should bring an AI companion. It’s safe to assume that they will usually make a fight easier, but not necessarily this time, and I will explain why in a bit.
I also recommend learning and setting the Wizardry Spell “Absorb Vitality” for this fight. You don’t need to invest much into your Wood Virtue to unlock it. This is a handy ability to use in general, but it will really help save some Dragon’s Cure Pot uses in this fight. You will be able to execute a Fatal Strike on his clones several times, which will give you some good heals when used in combination with “Absorb Vitality”.
The Boss Fight
At the very beginning of the fight, Zhang Rang will summon several clones to overwhelm you. Instead of trying to attack Zhang Rang right off the bat, you’ll want to start dealing with his clones. Individually, they are fairly easy to take down, but you’ll want to keep an eye and ear out for attacks around you. Zhang Rang will sometimes initiate a Critical Blow (glowing red attacks) from a far distance, which will be difficult to react to.
To make matters worse, his clones can initiate Critical Blows as well, although they do not have the same range as Zhang Rang’s. Essentially, you will want to be on the move through much of the fight so you don’t become an easy target. This will become easier as his clones will eventually have greatly reduced Spirit Gauge limits, making them much more susceptible to Fatal Strikes.
You must take down his clones for a couple of reasons. First, this will reduce the limit of Zhang Rang’s Spirit Gauge, but his clones also give Zhang Rang buffs that make will make it harder to inflict significant damage. However, be careful! You don’t want to get rid of all of his clones, as he will spawn new ones once they are all defeated. AI companions will still target his clones, which is why you may not want to bring them along.
The fight will become easier as it progresses. With this approach, it shouldn’t take you too many more tries to defeat Zhang Rang in Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.
