In a new PlayStation earnings call, Sony president Hiroki Totoki stated that it is planning on releasing more family friendly games in the future. This comes after the recent success of Astro Bot, which won several awards (including Game of the Year) and has sold over 1.5 million copies.
He also said that, after the success of Helldivers 2, “The fact that titles in genres we are planning to expand in the future, including titles for families and live service games, have received these awards is a major stride towards building a broad title portfolio.” It is unknown if this means that titles such as Little Big Planet, Sly Cooper, and other similar titles from PlayStation’s history will make a return.
Recently, PlayStation announced that starting on February 13, they will release new weekly levels for Astro Bot. These levels will be available for free and will continue until March 13.
The following levels will release on these dates:
- Feb 13: Tick-Tock Shock
- Feb 20: Thrust or Bust
- Feb 27: Cock-A-Doodle-Doom
- Mar 6: Hard to Bear
- Mar 13: Armored Hardcore
Recently, Astro Bot reached 1.5 million copies sold on PlayStation 5 as of November 3. Astro Bot sales will likely be updated in the next quarterly financial results release early next year.
Despite Sony CFO Hiroki Totoki’s recent comments on PlayStation original IPs, it’s clear that Astro Bot is an IP that should be fostered for years to come. The game has already become a trending topic on Twitter and other social media platforms as well. This is due to Astro Bot’s many easter eggs and cameos from other first-party and third-party games.
Astro Bot is available now on PlayStation 5. PlayStation will likely reveal more about their initiative to release more family games in the future.
