Nintendo is already preparing to take measures against scalpers when the Nintendo Switch 2 console launches later this year, Nintendo president and CEO Shuntaro Furukawa revealed to the Japanese press via Nikkei.
According to Furukawa, Nintendo gained experience from the original Nintendo Switch console launch, which saw scalpers resell the console at very high prices. It’s unclear what the preparations will entail, but it should ensure that Nintendo Switch 2 consoles will be in the hands of fans instead of scalpers.
“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like),” Furukawa said. “We are making preparations.”
Furukawa also stated that the company would continue to support the original Switch after Switch 2’s launch as long as demand for the console remains. According to the report by Sankei, Furukawa believes the Switch 2 announcement would not have a major impact on sales of the current Switch consoles.
Nintendo Switch 2 features a new stand, new magnetic joycons, a mysterious new button, and a new dock and handheld base. The console is expected to have Hall Effect sticks, which eliminate the stick drift problems of the original Nintendo Switch. Publisher Nacon expects the Nintendo Switch 2 to launch between April and September 2025, and other publishers like EA have teased their plans for the console.
Nintendo confirmed that the console plays exclusive games, as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games via backwards compatibility. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
Lastly, a Nintendo Direct will be held on April 2 to showcase the new console and its games. Fans hoping to try the console out can attend the Switch 2 experience, an event that will be held around the world.
