To celebrate Dragon Quest Day, Square Enix announced the new Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake will release on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Windows. More news about the game is seemingly imminent, with a potential trailer coming as soon as Summer Game Fest 2024.
A release date for Dragon Quest III HD-2D was not announced yet, but Square Enix promises “the legend of Erdrick draws near.” The Dragon Quest series’ Twitter account posted a teaser with the game’s updated logo, revealing the aforementioned platforms. The teaser’s tagline reads “the legacy begins.”

As the project’s title suggests, Dragon Quest III is being remade in the popular HD-2D engine in use in other Square Enix games such as LIVE A LIVE and Octopath Traveler. The game was first announced in May 2021 for unannounced platforms at the time. It was confirmed to receive a simultaneous worldwide release.
Back in December 2023, Yuji Horii confirmed that he’s playtesting the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake. The Dragon Quest creator thanked fans for their support, which made development of the remake possible in the first place. Horii also reiterated that development of Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate is still underway with no confirmed release date.
The latest entry in the Dragon Quest series, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, surpassed one million copies sold worldwide. The game reached this milestone in just over a month’s time since its launch on December 1, 2023. Dragon Quest is especially popular in Japan, so the game quickly sold out at retail.
Lastly, Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake is coming soon to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Windows.
