In a new data mine of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, code that supports 4K resolution (3840 x 2160) has been spotted. Now, as we all know, the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch OLED models are all only capable of 1080p, with Nintendo Switch Lite supporting a max of 720p. This is what makes this piece of code so interesting, as it’s a strange addition to a Nintendo Switch title.

This is listed within an if statement, likely within a separate function. In short, this is a suspicious addition to the code that could mean anything. It’s possible that this was an oversight and means absolutely nothing in the long run, but it sure is interesting, considering the rumored 4K support for Nintendo Switch 2. Could Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door have been planned for the next console at some point? It’s impossible to tell, and we’ll likely never know why this was included.
Nintendo Switch 2 is rumored to feature a 1080p 8-inch display with a Dock that supports 4K resolution via NVIDIA DLSS. This will all be powered by the NVIDIA Tegra T239 chip, with a rumored 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM. With these specs, the console will likely support 4K30 docked while 1080p60 in handheld mode. As of now, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that the company will reveal details on this next-generation system sometime within Fiscal Year 2025. A new Nintendo Direct will premiere next month, but it will only focus on Nintendo Switch titles.
