Shuntaro Furukawa Announces Existence of Nintendo Switch Successor; Reveal Coming This Fiscal Year

    The wait is almost over.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa has announced for the very first time that the company will make an announcement regarding the successor of the Nintendo Switch sometime during Fiscal Year 2025. This announcement comes alongside the Financial Report for May 7.

Nintendo’s fiscal year runs from April 1, 2024, through March 31, 2025. Therefore, an announcement will be made before this period ends. Take a look at the official statement from President Furukawa below:

“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

The successor to the Nintendo Switch, largely referred to by many as ‘Nintendo Switch 2’, is highly expected to launch around Early 2025. Dozens of rumors and reports have surfaced over the past few years, with reports ramping up since the beginning of 2024. Recent rumors indicate that the console may utilize a magnetic Joy-Con system, as well as a 1080p screen for portable play.

In addition to this information, the report also shared that the console is bigger than the Nintendo Switch but smaller than the Steam Deck. This is likely due to new internals, which are rumored to include bigger storage, new hardware, and more, which we likely won’t know about until the reveal. Accessory manufacturers have had their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2 but reportedly were not allowed to look at it. This was done by having the system in an opaque box.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated on everything regarding the Nintendo Switch successor. Nintendo has not given an expected release date at this time.
