An article from Deadline has revealed that Jason Momoa has departed the upcoming Helldivers film adaptation. Sony is now looking for a new lead star before it premieres in theaters on November 10, 2027.
While the reason for his departure is unknown, it could be anything from scheduling conflicts to creative differences. Momoa is most well-known for his roles in Aquaman as the titular character, plus his recent role in the film adaptation of Minecraft. This year, he will star in Supergirl as the space-based bounty hunter Lobo, and in the Street Fighter film as Blanka. He will also be in the upcoming Minecraft movie sequel. More details about the film’s story and cast will likely be available at a later date.
Justin Lin, known for several action films such as multiple entries in the Fast and Furious series and Star Trek: Beyond, will direct the film. A previous article from The Hollywood Reporter stated that “Lin is not a gamer and leaned into that as a strength when pitching his take on the material…He aims to find the humanity in the characters and weave timely themes into the story, while building out a world and mythology.”
Helldivers 2 initially came out on February 8, 2024. It released to rave reviews from critics and fans alike, selling 12 million copies within just three months. In such a short period, it has already outpaced God of War: Ragnarok. The cooperative shooter is available now on both PlayStation 5 and PC. One of the most recent updates in 2025 added cosmetics based on Halo 3: ODST. The latest update added the Cyborg enemy faction, and in the future, an update adding Warhammer 40,000 content will be available.
