Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel to A Minecraft Movie will release on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite, Nacho Libre) will return to direct the sequel.
The official Minecraft Twitter/X account has released the first key art for the upcoming sequel. The caption states “Building terrain,” and it showcases two pickaxes side by side on top of a crafting table. Check out the teaser poster for the A Minecraft Movie sequel below:
A Minecraft Movie initially released in theaters on April 4, 2025. While critics rated the film a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes, casual audiences have been more positive about the movie. This is due to its meme status which led to it being re-released in theaters a month later through the “Block Party Edition.” The Block Party Edition featured sing-a-long and “meme-a-long” subtitles, inviting watchers to take part in the film’s absurd humor. A Minecraft Movie is available to watch now on HBO Max.
A Minecraft Movie joins the ranks of countless video game adaptations that have released in the past couple of years. This includes Fallout, Arcane, The Super Mario Bros. Movie (also starring Jack Black), The Last of Us, Secret Level, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The sequel will release in the same year as Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and The Legend of Zelda film.
Over the last few years, Minecraft has seen a massive resurgence. Mojang has released several new cosmetic packs and spinoff games in recent years. Additionally, Nintendo also included Steve and the Minecraft franchise in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. An amiibo of the blocky character is available now at most local and online retailers. The game is available now on iOS, Android, the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
