Nintendo has confirmed that the “Close to You” Pikmin animated short films were created by Nintendo subsidiary Nintendo Pictures. The first Close to You video was released on YouTube on October 7, followed by the second video on Nintendo Today on October 8 and today’s confirmation of Nintendo Pictures on October 9.
Nintendo’s official X (formerly Twitter account) said, “We hope you enjoyed the two ‘Close to You’ videos released on October 7 and 8. The second video is available on Nintendo Today!, a free app available on your smart device. These are the first short films created by Nintendo Pictures Co., Ltd. Nintendo Pictures will continue to explore new creative possibilities through video content.”
Led by representative director Hiroshi Hirokawa, Nintendo Pictures was known as Dynamo Pictures prior to the acquisition was made by Nintendo. The Tokyo-based video production studio specializes in Japanese CG animation and its new focus includes creating visual content utilizing Nintendo IP. Recruitment for the studio began in November 2022.
This also isn’t the first time Nintendo has made animated shorts based on the Pikmin franchise, as it released animated shorts on the 3DS directed by Shigeru Miyamoto himself. These later released on Nintendo’s YouTube channel in 2020. Further, Nintendo recently revealed that its Nintendo Stars company will focus on ancillary-use business related to films featuring Nintendo IP.
Currently, Nintendo has two film adaptations in development: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will release on April 3, 2026. A live-action Legend of Zelda film will later premiere on May 7, 2027.
