This morning, Square Enix officially confirmed that Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake will be getting a free update to enhance the resolution and experience on Nintendo Switch 2. Previously, the game was limited to run at the maximum resolution and frame rate allowed by the Nintendo Switch port, but this update will remove those restrictions, allowing for a sharper and more polished version of the game.

According to Square Enix, the update will include the following features:

  • Graphical improvements which make the game appear sharper and smoother
  • Additional options which allow players to prioritize frame rate or graphics

In our 4.5/5 review of Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, we wrote, “Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake brings the first of the Erdrick trilogy to a modern audience, and it manages to do so with beautiful graphics, and various nice quality of life improvements that make the ageless RPG yet again a must-play for newbies or even veterans to the Dragon Quest franchise.”

Square Enix also revealed two brand-new HD-2D games in this morning’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase: Octopath Traveler 0 and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. Players of any HD-2D game, including Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, will receive special rewards in Octopath Traveler 0.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is out now for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake is set to launch on the same platforms, plus Nintendo Switch 2, on October 30, 2025.
