During today’s Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, Square Enix revealed Octopath Traveler 0, the next game in the beloved HD-2D series, set to arrive on December 4. The game is set to release for both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. An overview of the game can be found below via the reveal trailer:
“Start from zero and discover the newest entry in the OCTOPATH TRAVELER series. Experience a story of restoration and retribution over the divine rings—an epic saga that unfolds across the realm of Orsterra. This exciting entry to the series brings all-new features and returning core elements from the series, including the series’ iconic HD-2D graphics blending retro pixel art and 3D CG art, Path Actions to interact with other characters in various ways, the Break and Boost battle system which can turn the tide of battle, and more. And for the first time in series history, fans will play through the eyes of their own customized protagonist and be able to rebuild their hometown after great destruction is brought to it. Embark on a journey of your own creation.”
Octopath Traveler just recently celebrated its 7th anniversary earlier this month, with the release of brand-new artwork by character designer Yukihiro Kajimoto. Rewards for players who played previous HD-2D games, like Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake or Octopath Traveler II, will be included in Octopath Traveler 0.
A message from Producer Hirohito Suzuki was also shared on the Square Enix Blog:
“The theme of this game is, ‘Embark on an adventure of your own creation.’
You create your own character from scratch in the character creator, and your journey is about rebuilding your destroyed hometown from nothing.
The name OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 conveys the idea that you’re undertaking a journey of your own making.
…Whether you’ve played the first game in the series, OCTOPATH TRAVELER: Champions of the Continent, or even neither, we’ve packed this game with original experiences that can be enjoyed by anyone!
I look forward to players experiencing this new story for themselves.”
A Collector’s Edition was also revealed, exclusive to the Square Enix Store. This set features the following items:
- Full OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 game
- All Digital Deluxe Edition content (as above)
- 8-Sided Dice of Wealth, Power, and Fame – A set of three 8-sided metal dice, each representing Wealth, Power, and Fame.
- Traveler’s Playing Cards – this deck features illustrations of the travelers who join you on your journey and the bosses you encounter along the way.
- Orsterra Continent Map Gaming Mat – features a newly illustrated map of the Orsterra continent, created specifically for this title.
- Ring of the Flamebringer – this ring plays a key role in the story of OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 – and now you can wear a physical version! It’s size 21 (Japanese sizing).
- OCTOPATH TRAVELER Arrangements Break & Boost Vol.3 (Music CD) – an arranged soundtrack of music used throughout the game. (This soundtrack CD will be released separately for market-wide sale at a later date.)
- Art booklet – a beautifully curated collection of illustrations from the game.
Square Enix also confirmed that the physical Nintendo Switch 2 copy will be on a Game-Key Card, and there will be no upgrade path for Nintendo Switch owners.
Octopath Traveler 0 will launch for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam on December 4.
