New Nintendo Patent Hints at DLSS for Switch 2

The Switch 2 may use deep learning super sampling similar to the PS5 Pro.

A new patent from Nintendo, filed in July 2023, has surfaced, which hints at the company’s future implementation of DLSS. For those unfamiliar, DLSS stands for “deep learning super sampling.” Essentially, it uses AI machine learning to upscale graphics and framerate without compromising performance and the overall look of the game. The PlayStation 5 Pro utilized something similar with PSSR.

It’s highly likely that the upcoming Nintendo Switch successor will utilize this technology. The console is rumored to release later this year. Further, Nintendo will officially reveal the console before the fiscal year ends in March 2025. While there have been several leaks and rumors about the console, nothing is known for sure besides the fact that it will be backwards compatible with the Nintendo Switch.

In 2025, the next major Nintendo games will be Xenoblade Chronicles X and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Nintendo initially announced the latter in the Nintendo Switch’s first year, all the way back in 2017. Over the years, the game has moved in and of development hell as Retro Studios returned to the series to help produce the game.

In 2023, Nintendo released a remastered version of the first Metroid Prime. They also released a new 2D Metroid game a few years prior, titled Metroid Dread. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will finally release in 2025 and feature Sylux, who first debuted in Metroid Prime Hunters and who Nintendo teased in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

Lastly, Nintendo will likely reveal more details about the Switch 2 in the coming weeks and months.
