Nintendo Switch 2 Rumored to Launch in Early 2025

An internal delay made known to publishers.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly launch in early 2025, according to various sources close to Nintendo‘s publishing partners. If true, this is an apparent delay from the console’s original release plans for 2024.

According to Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lique, information from five separate sources suggested that Nintendo’s next console slipped from 2024 to 2025. Eurogamer also heard “similar whispers” from industry sources, but they were not able elaborate further. However, more industry sources have stepped forward to corroborate the rumor and share additional insight.

Nintendo Switch 2 Launching in Early 2025 with a Strong First-Party Lineup

Although the Nintendo Switch 2 was originally reported to launch in late 2024, VGC is now reporting that Nintendo’s new console will instead launch in early 2025. Multiple industry sources reached out to VGC, claiming that Nintendo told publishers that the console will release within Q1 2025 specifically. Third parties were briefed on an internal delay for the console, and one publisher notes that Nintendo could be preparing stronger first-party titles for the launch.

The new launch timeline suggests Nintendo Switch 2 will be revealed sometime this year, similarly to the original console’s announcement in 2016 and release in March 2017. However, it’s worth noting that Nintendo has not officially commented to the public regarding the release or reveal of a Nintendo Switch successor. There’s smoke to this fire involving Nintendo’s new console, but the rumor should still be taken with a grain of salt for now.

Another recent rumor suggests all of the SEGA remakes and reboots shown at The Game Awards 2023 will be coming to the next Nintendo console. These SEGA revival projects include Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage: Revolution. She also notes that the Jet Set Radio game shown at the event is a reboot and not a remake, and it’s release is planned for 2027. A remake of Jet Set Radio is also planned. Similarly to the Jet Set Radio reboot, Crazy Taxi is another reboot with a release targeting 2027. The new Crazy Taxi game will feature online elements.
