Is Final Fantasy XVI an MMO?

Does the game have any multiplayer features?

Final Fantasy XVI is set to release in just a few days. With the upcoming release, some may wonder whether or not the game has any online mechanics. After all, producer Yoshi-P is most well known for his work on the famed MMO Final Fantasy XIV

Despite the team’s background, you might be surprised to see what type of game Final Fantasy XVI is. Here’s everything you need to know about whether or not Final Fantasy XVI is an MMO.

Is Final Fantasy XVI An MMO or a Single Player Title?

Final Fantasy XVI will not be an MMO. The game will be an exclusively single-player experience. This is despite producer Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, being known for the MMO Final Fantasy XIV. While some fans might be disappointed at the lack of multiplayer features, the development team at Creative Business Unit III is prioritizing XVI as a standalone single-player experience.

Yoshi-P has talked at length about how creating an MMO is different than creating a single-player game. In an interview with Game Informer, he stated, “[that] in developing an MMO, you have to create the hook for the next story.” Since XVI is a standalone story, it has a distinct beginning, middle, and end. This would not be possible if the game were an MMO.

In other interviews, Yoshi-P has talked about his concern that when people found out he was making XVI, “all these people were saying, ‘if Yoshi-P is going to make it, then it’s going to be an MMO'”. Yoshi-P working on both XIV and XVI doesn’t mean that one will be neglected in favor of the other. Final Fantasy XIV will have more support in the future, and Final Fantasy XVI is looking to be one of the most ambitious games in the franchise. You can expect XVI to have the same level of quality as XIV, even without any multiplayer features.
