Final Fantasy XVI: Is There Multiplayer Co-Op?

    No playing with friends here.

Final Fantasy XVI is being created by Creative Business Unit III, the creators behind the hit multiplayer online MMO Final Fantasy XIV. With this connection, you might be curious if the latest mainline FF title has multiplayer or co-op elements inside it.

XVI is set in Valisthea, with Clive Rosfield as the main protagonist. Director Hiroshi Takai and Producer Naoki Yoshida have prepared an action epic that will be available starting June 22, 2023. Here is everything you need to know about co-op in Final Fantasy XVI.

Will Final Fantasy XVI Have Multiplayer or Co-Op?

    Final Fantasy XVI

As of now no, there will not be any multiplayer elements at all in Final Fantasy XVI. This may come as a surprise to those familiar with Creative Business Unit III. However, it wasn’t their intention with XVI. This title is meant to be a single-player experience that can be enjoyed individually without the need to connect online or play together.

It would not make sense to allow multiplayer in XVI, as the game does not have a fit for it. As a story-driven RPG, there is no place to make this title co-op unless the team goes the MMO route as they did with Final Fantasy XIV. In the future, it could be possible to see a battle arena-style multiplayer mode where two Clives fight, but it does not seem likely with the direction of the title. It simply does not need it.

You cannot play with friends or invite people in any capacity throughout XVI. While it could be fun to play a game such as XVI with a friend or someone online, the focus with XVI was to create a satisfying title with an epic story and streamlined combat system.

What Makes Final Fantasy XVI a Single-Player Experience?

    Final Fantasy XVI

Final Fantasy XVI is a single-player experience, just like a majority of the previous Final Fantasy titles have been. You can expect to have a long main quest that will allow you to travel to beautiful vistas and hear triumphant tracks.

The team has put a heavy focus on the battle system for XVI. For the first time in mainline title history, there is only one playable character, Clive. You do not control the rest of your party. This is similar to other action titles while still retaining the party element of Final Fantasy, even if you do not control them. They will still accompany you on your mission but act alone as AI.

Final Fantasy XVI will launch exclusively for PlayStation 5 on June 22, 2023. Future platforms are not allowed until 2024.
