U.S. video game market results for February 2023 have been published, revealing PlayStation 5 is the best selling console of the month. The console led sales in both dollar sales and overall unit sales according to Mat Piscatella of Circana (formerly known as NPD Group).
In the U.S., PlayStation 5 led sales for February 2023 with Nintendo Switch placing in second for unit sales and Xbox Series X|S placing in second for dollar sales. Additionally, PS5 is the best selling platform year-to-date in unit and dollar sales. Hardware spending is now 29% higher compared to the same period last year (February 2022).
According to Mat Piscatella, video game hardware sales grew by 68% when comparing February 2023 results to February 2022 results. Moreover, accessories grew by 13%, and overall content spending grew by 1%. Total game spending in February 2023 increased to roughly $3.9 billion in the U.S.
Hogwarts Legacy was the best selling game of both February 2023 as well as 2023 year-to-date. Further, Hogwarts Legacy ranked 1st in February sales across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam platforms. New releases that ranked in February 2023’s top 20 best selling games include Like a Dragon: Ishin!, Octopath Traveler II, and Wild Hearts.
Strong hardware performance during February 2023 was driven by a significant increase in PlayStation 5 supply in recent months. The console led overall dollar sales this past December while the Nintendo Switch led in unit sales. Lastly, PlayStation 5 is the best selling console in dollar sales for 2022, and Nintendo Switch is the best selling console in unit sales for the year.
