In Octopath Traveler II you can choose to play as a Hunter named Ochette. During her first chapter, she can pick between two beasts to take with her. It’s almost like choosing a Pokemon starter! Which one you choose is up to you, but there are advantages and disadvantages to picking each one. Use our Octopath Traveler II Akala or Mahina Guide to decide on which one is for you!
Akala
Akala is a jackal-esque creature. Akala has a physical attack focus. When you call it in battle it will pinpoint and attack an enemy’s physical weakness. This is a really handy skill!
Mahina
Mahina is a big ol’ owl. Mahina has a magical attack focus. When you call it in battle it will pinpoint and attack an enemy’s elemental weakness. This is a really handy skill!
Which to Choose?
One of the reasons you should consider picking between the beasts is your play style. Are you more of a physical attacker or a spell slinger? What skill repertoire do you want Ochette to have? That question leads to what kind of role you want Ochette to fill.
One final thing to consider is that Ocette, as a hunter, can capture many monsters. So, you can cover whatever weaknesses you may have when playing as Ochette.
In Ochette’s first chapter most of the monsters, you can capture deal physical damage. This means that technically Mahina is the best option if you choose to start off with Ochette. If you prefer Akala then you may want to plan your entire party out a bit and add Ochette to your party a little later.
