US NPD: Nintendo Switch is the Best-Selling Console of 2022, PlayStation 5 Leads in Dollar Sales

Nintendo and PlayStation lead sales for the year.

The NPD Group published year-end results for December 2022, revealing Nintendo Switch is the best-selling console of 2022 in unit sales.

According to NPD’s Mat Piscatella, the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console of December 2022 and the entire year in unit sales. The PlayStation 5 led in dollar sales for December 2022 and the entire year. Further, Nintendo Switch is second in total dollar sales for 2022.

2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling game of December 2022 and the year according to the US NPD results. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet ranked second in December 2022 and sixth for the entire year. The gaming market is expected to grow even further in 2023 due to a plethora of major game releases.

“U.S. consumer spending on video game content, hardware and accessories totaled $7.6 billion in December 2022 – an increase of 2% when compared to a year ago – bringing full year 2022 spending to $56.6 billion. Factors impacting 2022 spending included continued supply constraints of console hardware, a relatively light slate of new premium releases and macroeconomic conditions,” said Mat Piscatella, NPD Group video game industry advisor. “With a highly anticipated slate of new games and the reduction or even elimination of console hardware supply constraints, 2023 could very well see the market return to growth.”

Lastly, Nintendo plans to publish its nine months earnings release for fiscal year ending in March 2023 on February 7.
