MechWarrior 5 officially joins the list of Epic exclusives

It looks like MechWarrior 5 has fallen to what is all too common now for upcoming games. They took to a development update today to announce that it would be coming to the Epic Games Store on December 10th (which is a delay from the original September 10th), with additional details regarding the situation.

Within the development update, they talked about refunds and what those who stay pre-ordered can expect. Firstly, they stated that the deal was to make MechWarrior 5 “the best MechWarrior game it can be”. We’ll have to wait till December 10th to see how that holds up. Otherwise, fans can get refunds for their pre-orders until September first. This will let them keep the bonus MechWarrior Online content, but does not allow access to the upcoming game. You also won’t be able to access the closed beta, which premieres for pre-order users in November. If you want more information, you can check out the dev update yourself as well as the FAQ here.

This news should no doubt be disappointing to most if not all of those looking to play the game. Thankfully this doesn’t rule out a Steam release, but at this point we don’t know. What do you think of the situation and how they handled it? Let us know!

Techland is still working on free content for Dying Light 1, studio intends to bring those ideas to the sequel.

If we can give something to Techland‘s open-world parkour zombie game it’s how much the team stuck with it, improved on what’s already there and kept providing content, to the point of building a loyal community over the years. And just when you think the Polish team is finally letting their baby rest in favor of the upcoming sequel, they straight up confirm that they are still actively working on Dying Light 1.

    Techland’s Tymon Smektala states:

“If we had an idea we’re unsure about for Dying Light 2, we could mimic that idea to some extent in support of the first game and see how it works. We can see what people find attractive and what’s unattractive to them.”

He later continues on how big of a factor the word to mouth was for Dying Light 1 despite not necessarily receiving stellar reviews:

“We had a meeting right before E3 where we said we still wanted to add things to the first one. And there’s now a small team which is working on additional stuff that will happen in Dying Light.”

Needless to say, this dedication will probably extend to Dying Light 2 for the next few years, it is indeed nice to know that said sequel is going to be a full package containing years of content and experiments by the team and then more.

Dying Light 2 is coming to PS4, Xbox One and Windows for 2020, are you confident in picking it up day one knowing the game is most likely going to receive constant free content for the foreseeable future?

Opinion: Metacritic Is Detrimental To Game Reviews

When people want to gain an assessment of a game’s quality, Metacritic is the primary destination. The website is responsible for aggregating multiple game reviews into a single “Metascore” that players can reference. This process involves converting a game review score into a numerical value.

Left to its own accord, Metacritic can be a helpful tool for gauging a general consensus. Paired with the color coding, Metacritic scores can make or break a person’s decision to purchase a game. Not to mention, it provides an easy database to access the reviews of multiple websites in one place.

Unfortunately, Metacritic also holds the capacity to do harm in the realm of gaming discussion due to significant fundamental issues with the website.

    An Inherent Bias

A common misperception around Metascores exists concerning how Metacritic arrives at the score. It is natural to assume that it is calculated by simply taking the average of the reviewers, and this is mostly true. But another component exists: the “weight” of a review. Depending on the publication or critic, Metacritic will assign a greater “weight” to them. Under this system, reviews from IGN and Gamespot might hold more influence over the Metascore than other sites.

This system is problematic because the criteria for assigning “weight” is vague. According to Metacritic, a publication’s “weight” is “based on their quality and overall stature”. What remains unclear is the metric that quality measured, because of the inherent subjectivity associated with a review. A publication’s overall stature , however, can be measured with quantitative data. Due to the nature of quantitative data, it is likely relied upon more when determining “weight”.

Regardless of personal sentiments, it would not be a stretch to assume that most readers would want game critics to have an equal voice. A website’s popularity does not always translate to quality, and that should be reflected in the Metascore.

    More Numbers, Less People

Metacritic fosters a culture of game discussion and game reviewing that emphasizes the numerical score over the justification for said score. Numbers are so effective in reviews because it immediately communicates one’s assessment of a game. Under most circumstances, Whether it be a 9.6/10, or a 4.2/10, it is easy to digest and understand the meaning underlying these numbers.

The use of numbers within a review aren’t problematic in itself. Yet without context, numbers hold little value. For example, God of War was given a perfect score from IGN when released in April. When discussing review scores, most people tend to credit the publication, just as I just have above. In reality, the views represent truly represent  Jonathon Dornbush’s opinion.

This information is valuable because it gives a name to the review, and enables us to understand the person’s taste in games. In addition, it allows people to find reviewers that resonate with their personal opinions. Yet Metacritic does not display the name of the reviewer on their page. Besides a link to the review, the name of the publication takes precedent.

    Conclusion

There are other issues surrounding the dominance of Metacritic apart outside of its control, including the idea that most readers focus on obtaining key information rather than reading complete reviews. However, the greater emphasis on numbers and the “weighted average” raise enough cause for concern. When Metacritic opts to highlight the qualitative elements of game reviews, whether it be listing common criticisms or including the the name of the reviewer, the culture around game reviewing could improve for the better.

Opinion: Digital storefronts on consoles need more incentives

More people are purchasing games on digital storefronts than ever before. One of the greatest draws of digital gaming lies with convenience of access and purchase compared to physical media. Slowly but surely, an all-digital future for console gaming is within reach.

Yet there are several drawbacks present within digital gaming, including the idea that the player does not truly “own” their digital titles. Alongside other factors, physical media continues to remain the largest driver of sales in the AAA gaming market. Some prefer to own a collection of games, and others want the flexibility to share their game with others.

While I have recently opened up my gaming purchases to encompass digital titles, physical media remains my personal preference. Yet if the digital storefronts on consoles featured more quality-of-life changes that made digital gaming more appealing, it could become the ideal means of purchasing games.

    Digital Game Pricing

With few exceptions to the rule, suggested pricing of most new game releases are identical on physical and digital storefronts. When Death Stranding releases, the average consumer will pay $60 USD to play the game regardless of its format. And down the line, discounts on the game are inevitable across physical and digital storefronts.

Digital games tend to receive heavier discounts after release (especially with PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold). However, physical games often follow suit and tend to have price cuts that are more permanent. Under those conditions, there are minuscule differences in costs between physical and digital media from the initial purchase.

Yet physical media is associated with higher manufacturing and shipping costs. On a game-to-game basis, developers and publishers obtain a smaller portion of revenue from physical sales than digital sales. Therefore, the natural conclusion is that they want to encourage players to purchase their games digitally. However, the benefits of accessibility and reliability associated with physical games prevent the digital space from dominating the gaming industry.

    Making Adjustments

In order to combat this perception, digital storefronts on consoles need to implement new strategies to spur digital game sales without alienating players that prefer physical media. Besides hosting more frequent and robust sales, fundamental changes in the distribution of digital media and its associated benefits are key to adapting to the changing landscape.

Nintendo currently has several strategies to encourage the purchase of digital games. For one, purchasing a physical copy of a game only nets you one-fifth of the gold coins one would normally receive from a digital purchase (i.e. 60 coins instead of 300 coins for a full- priced game). These coins accumulate over time and allow you to discount titles of your choice on the Nintendo eShop.

The other strategy is the recent promotion of Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers. For $99.99, consumers can obtain two vouchers to redeem on any eligible game released within a year of purchase. Effectively, it provides a $20 discount for players that are confident paying ahead of time to redeem games down the line. It appears this promotion is temporary, only lasting until July 31st, but it would not be surprising to see it return in the near future.

Microsoft offers a similar rewards program that encompasses Xbox, allowing users to earn points purchasing games and completing tasks. Sony currently has nothing along those lines for the PlayStation Store, although they offer a credit card tailored to people that purchase games frequently on the PlayStation Store.

    A Permanent Discount

While these strategies certainly set the foundation for a digital-friendly future, concerns surrounding digital gaming are significant enough to warrant a bigger change: permanent price cuts. For example, a digital game would feature a lower price tag from day one compared to its physical counterpart. This accomplishes two major goals for digital gaming. Firstly, it positions digital media as the cheaper alternative to physical media. Secondly, it eases some of the complaints levied at digital gaming in its current state.

As stated prior, most point out that people do not fully “own” their digital purchases. If an outage were to occur within a gaming ecosystem, one would lose access to games not installed on the hard drive. Not to mention, digital games take up much space (especially on the Nintendo Switch) and require additional purchases to upgrade storage. These are clear drawbacks, but providing digital games at a cheaper price point helps mitigate some concerns.

    Conclusion

Even as someone that gravitates towards physical media, it remains clear that digital gaming will dominate the upcoming generations. PlayStation 5 might ensure that physical media lasts one more console generation, but the writing is nearly on the wall. The transition will be abrupt for the non-digital crowd, and some will actively question the legitimacy of digital gaming. With the right adjustments to the digital storefronts, however, more people will view digital gaming in a positive light.

Infliction, a psychological horror game, comes to consoles and Switch this year

It appears that a psychological horror game looms on the horizon for console users. Infliction is a title from two different studios. On one hand there’s Blowfish Studios, who have developed and published a wide array of indie titles. On the other though is Caustic Reality, who featured this title as their first game.

Infliction itself is an exploration of the dark aspects that can hide in something as simple as a normal home. You go through the game, discovering pieces of evidence that answer why you’re there as well as what’s going on. The concept is similar to the critically acclaimed Gone Home, but with a much darker setting. The key difference to this game is that you’re not alone. Someone, or something is inside the house and seeks to tear you apart from the inside. It’s waiting for its perfect moment to strike you. You must try to discover the truth before it’s too late, and the being takes you over.

The game has received awards from groups like Pax Aus and Player2.net.au, and has an 85% recommendation rating on Steam making it a solid title. If you’re looking to play it on consoles, you thankfully don’t have to wait long. The game will release on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One during Q4 of 2019. If you own a PC, you can pick up the game right now for $19.99!
