Realm of Ink is a fast-paced, ink-washed action roguelite where the line between fate and freedom blurs, and your very existence is written in the margins. As Red, players chase the Fox Demon only to discover they are trapped inside a narrative not of their making. The only escape is rebellion, cutting through enemies, illusions, and the story itself.
In this living manuscript, death is not defeat, it’s rebirth. Each run reshapes the narrative, unlocking new combat forms, supernatural abilities, and evolving “Story Relics” that rearrange themselves with every attempt. Along the way, players will confront four powerful bosses determined to keep them ink-bound, and encounter more than 20 mythical beings inspired by Chinese folklore.
With every slash, every revelation, and every rebirth, players inch closer to breaking the cycle and writing their own ending.

Lastly, here’s a synopsis of the story, via Kodansha:
What would you do if your crush had ear-splitting farts? For Aimi and Nami, the answer is to cry tears of joy for being able to pinpoint at a distance the object of their affections, Kirio, from a single toot. These are the kinds of deep, philosophical questions the two friends/rivals in romance pose to each other to prove their love for this boy who hardly seems to know they exist. That won’t stop them from conducting nightly rituals to entice him into their dreams, though, or listing out what exactly they like about him, down to the very last organ. But when push comes to shove, will they choose their hilarious friendship over a shot at love?

An overview of the many easter eggs fans should keep an eye out for in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie released on April 1. As of today, the film reached $964 million worldwide worldwide. While its predecessor earned $1.36 billion worldwide, it’s likely that the recent film’s revenue will only continue to increase now that it’s available on digital formats. Additionally, the movie stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan Michael Key as Toad, Anya Taylor Joy as Peach, and Jack Black as Bowser. Lastly, Brie Larson voices Rosalina, Benny Safdie plays Bowser Jr, Donald Glover plays Yoshi, and Glen Powell plays the role of Fox McCloud.
Looking Glass Studios released Thief: The Dark Project, revolutionizing stealth gameplay in the nineties. Its unique approach inspired a multitude of franchises while the series remained dormant. This is in parallel with the advent of OtherSide Entertainment, as it’s composed of those who shepherded PC gaming toward innovation. When OtherSide Entertainment unveiled Thick As Thieves at the Game Awards, I was interested, but it came with a catch. This was going to be a free-for-all extraction heist where the fastest reaps the rewards.
While it’s something different, especially in the extraction genre, it was also getting saturated. Ahead of its launch, it was decided to change Thick As Thieves into a co-op stealth game. It’s honestly for the best, as it helps it stand out while harkening back to the founders’ legacy. Thick As Thieves, while fun, as there are familiar elements to explore, there are still some issues leftover from its extraction heist past.
Now Arriving at: Kilcairn
In the height of the Industrial Revolution, Kilcairn is full of rich and wealthy denizens as they party all night. This allows an opening for the Thieves’ Guild to steal beneath their feet as they send the very best. Each thief specializes in their own feats, bringing different skills to the table and pursuing contracts via telegram. The threats ahead are not only human or mechanical, as the citizens of Kilcairn also dabble in the paranormal. So each thief must undergo the initiation process to become aware before stealing from the rich.
Through the two available levels, Loading is breathtaking for its twentieth-century aesthetic. Each building is massive, not just on the outside, but on the inside as well, with multiple vantage points. There are many ways to enter and exit a building, and memorizing the layout becomes second nature. While the exterior looks imposing, the interior uses the same structure and layout, varying only at the point of interest. This also affects traps, since layouts remain the same and there’s no way to turn them off.
Preparing for the Next Heist
Once the intro wraps, Tristain recruits and assists the upcoming thief through the brief tutorial level. This teaches how to seek clues, use each thief’s utility, and sneak around to steal. It’s a pretty simple onboarding process: stealing a diamond, and all there is to do is avoid any incoming threat. Like Thief, there’s a light indicator at the bottom-center of the screen, instead of the source. Some Constables walk around and patrol; they’re everywhere as the turrets cover every corner. Additionally, there are Hauntstables that react to sound and deal damage in close proximity; getting caught by one guarantees failure.
However, the way contracts are handled in-game feels disconnected overall, as it’s a remainder of the previous concept. There are level-based missions that are random, and there are story-based contracts given by the guild. The only way to exit the level is to complete both objectives, which feels too forced and, as a result, makes heists feel longer to complete. Even when there are hints scattered across the level, they’re not helpful when they’re prioritizing the missions instead. It feels unclear with the direction of the game progression, as major contracts lock away important upgrades.
In between sneaking and heisting is the safe house, granted by the Thieves’ Guild after a valiant effort. This is where heists are planned, and contracts are achieved from the special 0451 line. Loot also becomes a decoration, scattered across the hideout, and feels rewarding to watch the thief’s developing career. Collecting loot feels good, especially after outpacing a Constable, but after filling the pockets, it begins to make noise. Finding vaults is the means of setting aside funds and saving them in the stash. This simple action alone makes up for the game’s current shortcomings, as the core gameplay is simple and familiar, rewarding curiosity rather than stifling it.
The Spider Crawls and the Chameleon Hides
The Spider is the default character at the start of the game; her kit focuses on enhanced mobility. Her grappling hook lets her mantle onto high places, allowing for easy escapes, and she also has smoke grenades to easily sneak around. Further along in her progression, she can use fairies to pickpocket constables and interact with light switches from a distance. So far, she’s great at stealth but isn’t as physical, and she doesn’t have any offensive kits. The lack of a blackjack makes encounters hard, as Constables can hear from a large distance at times, and stealth takedowns are the only means of combat.
Meanwhile, there’s The Chameleon, whose kit relies more on subdefuge and blending in between guards with his mask. As much as I would like to write about him, he’s rather inaccessible at the moment. Tied back to the progression issues with the contracts, Chameleon is only unlocked after completing the eighth contract, which feels hard to reach. There were additional characters featured in the announcement trailer as well, but given the change in direction, The Hood whose largely a Garret stand-in, isn’t the focus anymore. Additionally, given the co-op component, it would be reasonable to have Chameleon available, but in the end, it’s just two Spiders at the start of the game.
The Thieves are Back in Business
Stepping forth into the Thieves’ Guild gives a sense of familiarity for a time that’s long gone in PC gaming. Where core design rewarded curiosity in every corner, and it’s back in Thick As Thieves. There’s a lot to look forward to in Thick As Thieves, given its solid foundation, but its previous iteration holds it back.
The reduced scope does more harm than good, as it delays the promised four-hour runtime. With design decisions like the hints, lack of combat, and the progression system, along with restricting the other playable characters through progression. It’s these sudden decisions that changed what could’ve been a fun afternoon into an overnight nightmare, as there are issues among the shadows.

Nihon Falcom’s action RPG Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is an intriguing outlier in the series for its dark gothic inspiration. The world of Ys is certainly worth revisiting for its fantastic characters and world-building, and gamers may do so with a detailed retelling of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox in its official novelization by Anna Kashina and Dragonwell Publishing. The novelization of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is a compendium of Adol Christin’s journey in the prison city of Balduq and the surrounding region, expanding upon the player’s journey through Kashina’s faithful interpretation. Its pages are full of insightful lore and dialogue that both emphasizes Adol’s character and brings more life to this particular segment of Adol’s storied life.
Like the game itself, the novelization begins with Adol’s arrival in Balduq, which is famous for its high security prison under the direct jurisdiction of the Romun Empire. Adol didn’t see his own arrest at the city gates by the prison warden himself coming, and to make matters worse for him, his escape attempt sees him transformed into a Monstrum, a supernatural warrior, by a mysterious woman named Aprilis. This transformation traps Adol in a curse linked to Balduq itself, binding him to an eternal bout in the Grimwald Nox against monsters born from people’s nightmares.
What makes the story of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox so memorable and different is that Adol is not alone with his curse. Over the story’s course, he’s joined by affluent Pendleton prodigy Krysha, the violent but dutiful Credo, and many other faces who wish to defy their fates as Monstrums together. To break such a curse, Adol must delve into the history of Balduq and its facilities to uncover clues behind the curse while fending off against the nightmares of the Grimwald Nox, with the elusive guidance of Aprilis. It’s a story full of mystery and conspiracy with a darker tone compared to other Ys entries, but it still has those elements of a feel-good story through to the end.
The story of Monstrum Nox is expertly retold by Kashina, and it greatly complements the game. Her retelling of the story brought more attention to detail than I was expecting, too. The novel follows the narrative beats of the game while slightly expanding on more minor details that players are more likely to gloss over while playing the game. When laid out in a book format, it’s clear that the story of Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is dense with a lot of characters involved. Reading the novel is also an excellent way to “replay” the story at your own pace, and it makes for a great addition to a late-night reading session.
The physical hardcover version of Monstrum Nox from Dragonwell Publishing is high-quality with officially licensed key art from Falcom. The dust jacket is superb and makes the novel a show piece for any Ys fan’s collection. If I had to pick out one gripe, I would have liked to have seen some all-new original art for this particular release, similarly to light novel adaptations of popular manga and anime.
Overall, I’m really pleased with Monstrum Nox, and I can’t stress enough that you should experience the game itself before diving into the novel. The joy of playing through a Ys game cannot be matched—it’s a unique experience of its own. The novel expands and complements the game’s story and moments in ways you will appreciate if you’ve played the game. I certainly recommend it.
Monstrum Nox is available in hardcover at Ys Books and as an e-Book (Kindle) for $34.95 and $7.95, respectively. The softcover version will release this summer for $19.95.
Ys IX: Monstrum Nox is available now for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Final Weapon reviewed Ys IX: Monstrum Nox and gave it a 4/5 score.
