Kakao Entertainment has announced that it will shut down the Tapas webtoon platform after purchasing it in 2021. Its exact closure date is currently unknown.
Kakao previously purchased Tapas and Radish, the latter of which is a webnovel platform, for approximately $780 million USD. Both would be merged into Tapas Entertainment, which will be closing at some point soon. It reportedly plans to notify publishers and rights holders about the shutdown, including details on the service’s end date, content management, and settlements. It is unknown what Kakao plans to do in regards to refunds and the handling of content and user data.
In October 2025, Yen Press announced a partnership with Tapas to release its light novels on the platform. At the time of the partnership’s release, Tapas users would have had access to the first five “episodes” of each series for free, along with an option to pay to unlock the rest or wait for free access. Episodes launched daily for each series.
The following series from Yen Press were added to Tapas first:
- The Eminence in Shadow by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrator Tōzai
- Overlord by Kugane Maruyama and illustrator so-bin
- Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- by Tappei Nagatsuki and illustrator Shinichirou Otsuka
- The Summer Hikaru Died by Mio Nukaga with original story by Mokumokuren
- That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime by Fuse and illustrator Mitz Vah
Lastly, an anime adaptation of the SSS-Class Revival Hunter novel/webtoon, available now to read on Tapas, will be adapted into an anime that will premiere in January 2027.
