An article from Deadline has reported that Dave Bautista is in talks to star as Kratos in the God of War live-action series. The announcement comes just a few weeks after Sony and Amazon announced that they would recast Ryan Hurst, who previously was attached to play Kratos, after a major injury he suffered on set.
Dave Bautista is most well known for his time as a wrestler for World Wrestling Entertainment, also known as the WWE, as well as his acting career. He has starred in Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy, and most recently, as Tagah in Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender. In the past, he has shown an interest in starring in a Gears of War adaptation. Currently, neither Amazon, Sony, or Bautista have announced if he will star in the upcoming God of War series.
During filming, Hurst tore a bicep while performing a stunt. Recovery time is estimated at 4-6 months, while a full return to strength could take up to a year. As Deadline states, “while Hurst’s full recovery is a priority, the period required for it was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate, leading to the difficult decision to recast the role.”
Lastly, Sony Santa Monica recently announced that God of War Laufey will release on February 16, 2027 for PlayStation 5. In addition, director Cory Barlog has revealed that a new God of War game focused on Kratos is also in development. Cory Barlog confirmed that the new Kratos-led God of War will directly connect to Faye’s story in Laufey. With this announcement, there are now three God of War games in development: God of War Laufey, the remake of the original God of War trilogy, and a new mainline Kratos-led game.
