Amphoreus set a new standard for storytelling direction and overall content quality, leaving many Honkai: Star Rail players wondering whether our next destination, Planarcadia, can match that high level of impact. After the great epic battle against the Lord Ravager Irontomb and its creator, Lygus, Jade approaches the Astral Express with a proposal from the IPC to join forces and form the Anti-Destruction Alliance. This discussion ultimately sets the Trailblaze to their next destination, Planarcadia, Himeko’s homeland, where the IPC has already advanced its operations on that planet.
We had the chance to explore Version 4.0 a bit early, and there’s a clear promise here in the cozy and vibrant Planarcadia.
Welcome to Arcadia!
Planarcadia is introduced as the world of Elation, and that identity permeates nearly every aspect of its design. It prides itself on being Ahatopia central. On this planet, they advertise that once it’s a full moon, the game known as the Phantasmamoon Games begins. The details of it appear to be obscure. However, if you come out as the winner, you will be able to ascend as an Aeon for one full minute. The concept of this is very fascinating. The story capitalizes on this with such great energy, but also alluring to deeper philosophical undertones about its premises entirely, that it poses a question of its value across the cosmos. Unlike Amphoreus, this planet is very vibrant and energetic, which is similar to Penacony in a way. Though I am certain that, as we progress through the story, that can possibly change.
This prologue heavily invests in world-building, character exposition, and captivating lore dumps, that it was able to achieve roping the player’s attention to learn more about the culture and mechanisms of Planarcadia. You’re not being rushed into immediate life-threatening chaos, yet you’re invited to observe, participate, and enjoy the fun nature of this update. After all that everyone has been through during the Amphoreus updates, this change of pace was really needed, even if we enjoyed those intense emotional rollercoaster introductions… at least for now. We have learned time after time that tranquility rarely lasts.
Aesthetically, Planarcadia feels heavily inspired by modern metropolitan Japan, blended with a strong internet-streaming culture vibe. It’s a sharp contrast to the atmospheres of Penacony and Jarilo-VI. At times, Graphia Academy even makes you forget you’re playing Honkai: Star Rail due to the fact that it resembles a typical Japanese high school straight out of an anime. It’s pretty quirky, yet charming at the same time. I’m also confident that, given the theme of this world, the soundtrack absolutely delivers on atmosphere. Whether you’re freely exploring the city streets or diving into combat, the music carries a distinct vibe that feels cohesive with Planarcadia’s identity. It’s energetic, yet also chill in a way that constantly reinforces the planet’s sense of spectacle. In contrast, while I understand why Amphoreus had its own musical themes that it did, I did find myself wishing for more consistently captivating tracks outside of the major boss encounters. The soundtrack truly peaked in those climactic fights, but that same level of familiarity wasn’t always present throughout our journey in there. Planarcadia’s tracks contain funky themes that are a lot more memorable from start to finish, just like Penacony’s.
What truly brings the planet to life are its puzzles and minigames. Interplanar Jump, Cosmicon Collective, and Nameless Whisper are all genuinely enjoyable and surprisingly therapeutic. The modern-yet-retro aesthetic is visually pleasing, and I’d personally rank these as some of the best minigames we’ve had across all planets so far. If I had to choose a favorite, it would absolutely be Interplanar Jump. As you explore previously unreachable areas, this 2D platformer-style mode has you solving traversal puzzles and collecting treasures along the way. If you enjoy classic platformers like Mario or Mega Man, you’ll understand why this mode feels so satisfying while touring the planet.
Intriguing Gameplay Updates!
Yao Guang and Sparxie are the new 5-star units introducing the brand-new Path of Elation. Yao’s banner runs throughout Version 4.0, while Sparxie appears in Phase 2. With early access to both units, I can say that Yao functions as a sub-DPS who buffs Elation damage. Since her banner spans both phases, she feels positioned as a foundational unit for future Elation DPS characters. For players focused on the meta, Yao is a strong long-term investment for team-building and endgame content. Another plus is that she doesn’t require her signature Light Cone to perform well, allowing players to save their Special Passes for other desired 5-star units.
Sparxie, on the other hand, is an incredibly fun main Elation DPS; however, she is very demanding. She requires specific team support to truly shine. Most notably, she heavily benefits from having her signature Light Cone, as the performance gap between that and available alternatives is significant. She also synergizes strongly with Sparkle to maximize her damage output, especially given her high Skill Point consumption. Fortunately, HoYoverse is offering a free selectable 5-star unit, and Sparkle is included in that lineup. You will also need a good sustain unit to ensure you are able to conserve your skill points as much as possible, which would be the 5-star unit Dan Heng – Permansor Terrae. He is technically free to claim so if you haven’t hopped on the game yet, now is the best time to do so because this offer lasts until the end of 4.0. It is also clear that Yao Guang would be necessary to bring her Elation DMG up as well. Whether you’re a dedicated meta player, a returning Trailblazer, or brand new to the game, there are several factors to consider before pulling for Sparxie. If you genuinely enjoy her playstyle and character, she can absolutely be worth the investment. I personally would recommend planning ahead carefully when farming for resources.
Sparkle and Black Swan received Novaflare buffs, which I also was also granted early access to. Sparkle has become a lot more Skill point friendly and gains more energy than ever before, which brings more value to use her in teams that you may have stopped using or future teams that could synergize with. While DoT is not very popular in gameplay styles, buffing Black Swan could possibly bring hope that they will cater to more DoT teams in the future. She increases DMG dealt by all allies and does a better job at maintaining DEF reduction. That in mind, her use is still very niche in comparison to someone like Sparkle, so I will say this is another similar case where you may have to consider how committed you are willing to be to her, potential future team-proofing, your love for the character, and/or if you like playing DoT.
A Cozy Yet Promising Future.
Embarking at Planarcadia definitely gives Honkai: Star Rail that nice cozy feel again, which I’m sure players will rejoice in. It recalibrates the escalation, which gives players time to breathe and experiment with the new path while also diving into the planet’s atmosphere. With the new Quality of Life updates, character buffs, captivating events, latest 5 stars, & appealing story, I strongly believe this update is the best time to be on this game. Especially if there are players who have not been on this game for a while.
