Nintendo Delays Switch 2 Pre-Orders in the United States Due to “Evolving Market Conditions”

An unprecedented time for the company.

    Published:

This morning, Nintendo has announced that pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in North America have been delayed from the original April 9 start date. This is a direct response to recent tariffs that United States of America President Donald Trump has announced, which are higher than expected in many countries where Nintendo manufactures consoles.

Back in 2019, the company moved much of its production of Nintendo Switch to Vietnam to avoid any potential impact of tariffs between the United States and China. In regard to Nintendo Switch 2, a 46% tariff has been placed on Vietnam’s exports to the United States of America. It was reported this morning that Vietnam General Secretary Tô Lâm expressed interest in cutting tariffs on the United States “down to zero” if a deal can be reached, but nothing has been announced at this time.

Eddie Garcia, SVP of Public Relations at Golin, shared the following message with The Verge on behalf of Nintendo:

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”

Nintendo Switch 2 will release on June 5, 2025. Mario Kart World will release alongside the system. The console will be available to purchase for $449.99 at launch in the United States, as confirmed by Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch 2 is the successor to the Nintendo Switch, which originally launched on March 3, 2017. The system is set to offer a wide variety of features, including backwards compatibility support for Nintendo Switch games. In recent months, Nintendo has begun making preparations for this next-generation system. This includes ending the Gold Points system, as well as stating that Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers cannot be used for Nintendo Switch 2 games.
