Toei has released a new clip for Butt Detective: Star and Moon, the latest entry in the Butt Detective film franchise. The clip teases the past of one of the movie’s characters, Phantom Thief G, before it premieres in Japanese theaters on March 20.
FRUITS ZIPPER will perform the opening theme for the third film, titled “Kawaiitte Magic” (Cuteness is Magic). The movie marks the third in the franchise, with the most recent being Butt Detective the Movie: Farewell, My Lovely Partner (Butt).

Butt Detective is an anime series that initially premiered on NHK International in 2018. New episodes of the anime released in 2021, alongside a new film. The series focuses on a detective with a butt for his face and his partner, a small brown dog named Brown, as they solve crimes. Toei initially announced the series’ second anime film in December 2023.
New episodes for the Butt Detective anime will premiere on April 5. These episodes will serve as a prequel to the upcoming film and will have him facing off against the international crime syndicate “Kaitō Academy” (Phantom Thief Academy).
The film’s story begins when Koala, one of the series’ characters, asks the titular Butt Detective to find a missing relative. The case takes Butt Detective to Stardust Island, the site of the disappearance, and also the home of the international criminal organization Phantom Thief Academy. The Academy is headed by Phantom Thief G.
Lastly, the new Butt Detective film, Star and Moon, will air in theaters in Japan on March 20. The anime will return in April.
