Toei Films has released the final trailer for the upcoming film, Butt Detective the Movie: Farewell, My Lovely Partner (Butt). The film will premiere in Japanese theaters tomorrow, March 20.
Butt Detective is an anime series that initially premiered on NHK International in 2018. New episodes of the anime released in 2021, alongside a new film. The series focuses on a detective with a butt for his face and his partner, a small brown dog named Brown, as they solve crimes. Toei initially announced the series’ second anime film in December 2023.

Toei Films recently released the final trailer for the upcoming Butt Detective anime film. The trailer showcases the film’s “campaign song.” NEMOPHILA performs the theme, titled “Odyssey.” Butt Detective the Movie: Farewell, My Lovely Partner (Butt) will premiere in Japanese theaters tomorrow, March 20. Kenji Satō will be directing the film, Natsuko Takahashi and Jun Narita will pen the script, and Hiroshi Takaki will be the movie’s composer. According to Anime News Network, “the film’s story revolves around the sudden reappearance of Oshiri Tantei’s partner who disappeared 10 years ago. He receives a mysterious message from Suisen and soon finds himself embroiled in a case of counterfeit art involving a massive plot to shake up the art galleries around the world.”
The previous film, which premiered in 2021, focused on the titular detective going against criminal mastermind Professor Shiriarty. The character is a play on Sherlock Holmes’ arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty. Poplar published Troll’s first Oshiri Tantei picture book in Japan in 2012, and the series has more than 9 million copies in print. The franchise has also inspired a stage musical and a Nintendo Switch game.
Lastly, Butt Detective: Farewell My Beloved Partner (Butt) will premiere tomorrow, on March 20, 2024.
