Kitao Sakurai (Bad Trip, The Eric Andre Show) will be the director of Sony and Legendary’s new live-action Street Fighter film, according to a new report from Deadline. Sakurai is takes the directorial duties of the Street Fighter project from Talk To Me filmmakers Danny and Michael Philippou, also jointly known as RackaRacka.
Sony and Legendary plan to release the new Street Fighter film on March 20, 2026. Currently, RackaRacka were initially set to direct the film, but they departed in early June 2024 due to scheduling conflicts with their A24 project, Bring Her Back. Capcom initially announced the Street Fighter film in 2023.
This wouldn’t be the first time the Street Fighter franchise received a live-action flick. In 1994, the world witnessed the first Street Fighter movie. It featured film stars such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and the late Raul Julia. Some fans might also remember the Chun-Li live-action movie that came out in 2009 as well.
The most recent entry in the Street Fighter franchise, Street Fighter 6, is available now on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Capcom recently collaborated with SNK to release Street Fighter 6 DLC character Mai Shiranui, who’s from the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters franchises.
Street Fighter 6 will be adding more character outfits for Fighting Ground characters throughout 2025, and starting in Year 3, the SF6 Fighting Passes will have items within them that can be used in Fighting Ground. Capcom has been seeing the requests from fans and confirmed that they have been working on Fighting Ground character outfits since 2024.
