The rumored Virtua Fighter reboot will feature rollback netcode, crossplay, and a wealth of single-player content, according to reputable SEGA and ATLUS insider Midori (@MbKKssTBhz5).
In recent weeks, Midori corroborated Persona 3 Reload datamines that suggest The Answer will be DLC. The insider also claimed that a Virtua Fighter reboot is currently in development at SEGA, with key Virtua Fighter staff being involved. As many have guessed, the reboot is part of SEGA’s Super Game initiative, which includes Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio reboots and remakes.
Virtua Fighter Reboot Maintains an Online/Esports Focus With Rollback Netcode
According to Midori, the new Virtua Fighter reboot emphasizes online and eSports play, but it will have both offline and online modes, similarly to Tekken 8. She also claims that a customization mode will be available in the reboot. SEGA supposedly has plans to release the Virtua Fighter reboot on all major platforms with crossplay support and rollback netcode. It’s unknown whether this involves a release on Nintendo Switch 2, however.
The new game has new characters with a “modern art style and character artist.” Players can expect a new main story and character side stories, if the rumor holds true. The game concept for this new Virtua Fighter title has changed many times since 2021, due to the existence and importance of the evolving Super Game initiative.
Midori continues and claims that streaming and spectating implementation is an important element of the game. The game is being developed as a modern competitor to Street Fighter and Tekken, with eSports concepts and mechanics that can be found in current fighting games today.
Those wanting to play a classic Virtua Fighter title may do so through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack right now. Nintendo’s subscription service offers Virtua Fighter 2 as a playable title in the SEGA Genesis – Nintendo Switch Online app for Expansion Pack members.
Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, the latest entry in the series, is available right now for PlayStation 4. The game is backwards compatible on PlayStation 5, and Tekken 7 collaboration DLC is also available now.
