What Happened in Episode 18? (Recap)

    The Apothecary Diaries episode 18

In The Apothecary Diaries episode 18, Jinshi learns from Maomao that a courtesan’s pregnancy will send her value in the trade plummeting downward. While in disguise, Jinshi begins to put the puzzle pieces together behind his stroll around town. Maomao quickly leaves, assuming that Jinshi is preparing to meet a courtesan himself.

Maomao visits the Verdigris House to catch up with Pairin and the others, but her real reason for being there is the person staying in the annex. This person turns out to be a courtesan suffering from syphilis, and its implied that she could be Maomao’s biological mother via a flashback scene. The courtesan is unable to care for herself, so Maomao decides to take care of her and give her medicine while a unpleasant man with a monocle spends time at the main building. Unsurprisingly, this turns out to be Lakan.

It’s clear that Lakan, who turns out to be Maomao’s biological father, is not pleased that Jinshi bought her out of her courtesanship at the beginning of the second cour. Maomao decides to hide from Lakan for the time being, with Jinshi giving her fair warning about his arrival. While waiting at the medicine shop, Maomao stumbles upon Suirei, who appears to be an apothecary herself.

Maomao encounters Suirei once more at the outer court’s secret herb garden, which appears to have been nurtured by Suirei. For some reason, Suirei seems eager for Maomao to discover Jinshi’s true identity. Funnily enough, it appears that both Maomao and Jinshi are interested in discovering more secrets about each other. This will eventually lead to what’s to come in episode 19, as more truths are brought to light.
