Jinshi and Maomao continue their adventure around town in The Apothecary Diaries episode 18, but the story takes a darker turn due to Lakan’s plan. The new episode is expected to delve into some of the more degrading aspects of a courtesan’s life.
The first cour of The Apothecary Diaries ran for 12 episodes and quickly became one of the most popular anime of 2023. In the second cour, Maomao returns to the palace after Jinshi buys her from the Verdigris House. As Jinshi’s assistant in the outer court, Maomao will continue to take new assignments that sees her meet all sorts of people at the emperor’s palace.
The Apothecary Diaries Episode 18 Release Date and Time
Episode 18 of The Apothecary Diaries premieres on February 10 at 10:45 a.m. PDT, or 1:45 p.m. EDT, on Crunchyroll. The new episode is simply titled “Lakan.” A total of 12 episodes will be released in the second cour, with 6 more to go after the release of episode 18. By the second cour’s finale, 24 episodes will be available for the first season of The Apothecary Diaries.

What Happened in Episode 17? (Recap)
Jinshi asks Maomao for assistance in The Apothecary Diaries episode 17, since he needs to enter town with a disguise. At first, Maomao is reluctant to help, but she decides to follow along since this is her opportunity to have some fun at Jinshi’s expense. Maomao begins to prepare Jinshi’s hair, makeup, and clothing in order to make him appear like an ordinary commoner. After some mishaps, Maomao and Jinshi are ready to have a jaunt around town.
Jinshi’s task in town seemingly involves a courtesan that Lakan is heavily interested in. This was teased in previous episodes, with Lakan pressuring Jinshi to look into these matters with Maomao. Specifically, Lakan calls on Jinshi to discover what degrades and devalues a courtesan the most. After having delicious chicken skewers in town together, Maomao is surprised to hear Jinshi ask such a question. She answers Jinshi, telling him that a courtesan’s value will plummet if they’re pregnant.
Episode 18 Preview
Jinshi finally meets the courtesan that Lakan was referring to, but it’s clear that he’s going to be in distress due to the task ahead of him. The preview trailer shows Jinshi grow angrier as The Apothecary Diaries episode 18 progresses, in contrast to Lakan’s cold and calculated nature.
