What Happened in Episode 15? (Recap)

In The Apothecary Diaries episode 15, Gaoshun asks Maomao to hear him out on a poisoning case involving a noble that ate the infamous pufferfish. Maomao is eager to taste the poisonous fish, but she first listens to Gaoshun explain that this incident is seemingly connected to another poisoning incident from 10 years prior. He explains that both of the victims were gourmets that enjoyed exotic foods, and both expressed the exact same symptoms. With a curious Jinshi ever present, Maomao decides to accept the assignment as Gaoshun looks for more information.

Maomao meets Basen, the second son of Gaoshun and a fellow attendant for Jinshi. Basen escorts Maomao to the scene of the poisoning incident and discovers a jar filled with an out-of-season seaweed. This is a curious discovery indeed, as it suggests that someone purposefully imported a poisonous material into the palace. Maomao explains how the seaweed is poisonous when not prepared correctly, and she subtly hints that the culprit could be the victim’s younger brother.

During the episode, Master Lakan collected hearsay and other stories about Maomao from other attendants at the outer court. Lakan finally confronts Jinshi and Gaoshun in their office, revealing a story about a woman that he loved at the Verdigris House. Jinshi is highly suspicious of the middle-aged strategist and knows that he might use Maomao for his own gain. Jinshi decides to hear out a case involving the death of a metalworker, which Lakan recommends that she should investigate.
