Bloomberg released a report this morning detailing news on Square Enix’s internal review of its game development efforts. President Takashi Kiryu revealed that the company plans to undergo an internal review of its game development structure, hoping to improve the quality of its titles.
This act will incorporate more in-house developed large titles and less of an emphasis on outsourced games. According to Bloomberg, the full plan on this matter is set to be revealed at the investor’s call in April, which begins Fiscal Year 2025 for Square. It’s unclear what this review will determine for Square Enix. Many could argue that the company should look toward multiplatform releases for its biggest titles, but there’s also something to be said about the scale of upcoming games. We’ll know more about where game development within Square Enix is headed in April.
So far, the company’s profit is up 0.8% year over year for the first three quarters of FY24. That is headed by 18.51 million units of software sold, with Final Fantasy XVI and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince cited as leading the digital entertainment front this past quarter.
The company put out multiple releases last year, with Final Fantasy XVI headlining the slate. Other notable releases included Octopath Traveler II, Star Ocean: The Second Story R, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Theatrhythm Final Bar Line, and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.
This year, Square Enix releases Foamstars today, which is available on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 for free as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription. In a few weeks, the company’s major 2024 title, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, will launch for PS5. Rebirth is the second title in the ongoing Final Fantasy VII Remake Project. Later in the year, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail will release for the popular MMO.
