NACON RIG 900 MAX HX Review: Maximum Performance and Comfort

    Incredible in the right ways.

    Published:

In the age of competitive online shooters and robust single-player experiences, NACON‘s RIG 900 MAX HX wireless gaming headset offers superb audio quality, comfort, and performance that brings gamers closer to the action. The headset and its compelling features also deliver in many of the right areas. Although its a premium headset, it has many qualities that gamers across different spectrums can appreciate on both consoles and PCs.

Setting up NACON’s new headset was quick and easy after the unboxing, and it quickly became a go-to device during gaming, work, and casual browsing. In addition, the RIG 900 MAX HX makes for a great headset while streaming music and podcasts. NACON’s latest offering became an integral part of my daily routine thanks to that ease of use and the comfort it provides. There’s so much more to delve into with the RIG 900 MAX HX that makes it a great all-around device.

RIG 900 MAX HX Provides A Great Out-of-the-Box Experience

The RIG 900 MAX HX is neatly packed with a charging station, USB-C cable, a universal adapter, and various pamphlets to get people started. I opted to immediately test out the headset by turning it on and connecting it to Bluetooth via my Samsung Galaxy S20. I was pleasantly surprised to see the headset connect in mere seconds with the convenient Dual Mode enabled.

The headset was ready for use out of the box, so I proceeded to listen to podcasts and music with Dolby Atmos turned on. Audio quality from the RIG 900 MAX HX is clear and superb, and its bass boost technology and 40mm drivers let me feel the twists and turns of each track with the sound precision I need. This extends into phone calls, Zoom calls, and in-game voice chat with the RIG 900 MAX HX, delivering a clear, accurate line of communication in wired and wireless modes.

As an officially licensed Xbox product, the RIG 900 MAX HX is tuned for competitive and casual gaming alike. While playing Starfield, Honkai: Star Rail, and Halo: Infinite on PC, I found myself completely immersed due to the ultra-comfortable dual-fabric ear cushions and Dolby Atmos-enhanced audio. I was also impressed with the depth of audio, which allows me to hear gunfights get progressively more intense and accurate as I approach them.

The easy flip-to-mute mic makes transitioning between party chats and solo experiences much more streamlined as well. My prior experiences with gaming headsets did not bring that balance of comfort and performance I needed for one reason or another, but the RIG 900 MAX HX manages to stick the proper landing right out of the box.

    Running the Marathon

After using the RIG 900 MAX HX for a week in different scenarios, I was more than happy with the results. Firstly, the new headset is very versatile thanks to its universal adapter, allowing for the headset’s use on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Although Dolby Atmos is not supported on Switch, I still enjoyed the incredible sounds of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on this headset.

What’s mode, the headset’s Dual Mode allows me to transition from PC to Switch with the simple press and hold of the Bluetooth button. I have the charging station and adapter connected to my PC via the included USB-C cable, so I dedicate the Bluetooth functionality to my smartphone and consoles. The RIG 900 MAX HX’s feature set is quite compelling since it makes day-to-day use feel as simple as the press of a key.

Moreover, the headset has a sleek design that ensures comfortable and durability all the same. The lightweight metal headband is really tough despite being relatively thin, and the head strap and ear cushions provide the necessary comfort and support for long play sessions. The dual-fabric design of the ear cushions was a smart design choice since it is very comfortable against skin and hair. Although the cushions are really soft, it manages to maintain its shape without any clear sign of wear.

Further, the 60-hour battery life on Bluetooth makes this headset a clear standout. The battery remained on high for quite a long time, and I didn’t need to charge the headset at all during the first week. The headset may be charged through a direct connection via its USB-C port or the dedicated charging port, which includes a magnet for securing it in place on the charging station’s base.

    Perfect Personalization

The RIG 900 MAX HX offers great audio in its preset configuration, but the headset manages to shine even further with its supported personalization features. Firstly, I created my profile by using the Dolby Personalization mobile app before using the Dolby Access app on PC. As shown on the packaging, Dolby Personalization creates a custom acoustic map from an analysis of the user’s ear, head, and shoulders. This gives a more precise audio experience for the specific user while giving the user more control of sound equalizers and additional settings in Dolby Access.

I didn’t need to adjust any of the Dolby Access settings since it was already tailored to the games I play on PC, but it’s still a reassuring feature set to have. Most of the settings I adjusted were in the RIG 900 Navigator app, which detected the headset through Bluetooth. After a brief update, the app allowed me to adjust mic amplification, equalizer settings, and the start mode with utmost convenience. Audiophiles can turn on the expert mode settings to adjust the finer details of their audio experience. In my case, I’m sticking to the normal mode with a custom profile that emphasizes clarity with some bass. I think the customization features are incredible and helped me find the right settings for gaming, music, and podcasts.

RIG 900 MAX HX is the Definitive Gaming Headset

Without a doubt, the RIG 900 MAX HX is an incredible headset at the $249.99 price point. It’s a well-rounded headset that works extremely well across a myriad of gaming scenarios and platforms. While gaming, the headset provides unparalleled comfort and sound. This is equally true while browsing, listening to podcasts, and enjoying my favorite tunes from my PC or smartphone. Once more, the Dolby Atmos and personalization features take it to the next level. I highly recommend the RIG 900 MAX HX as the headset to pick up for any of your gaming needs.
