Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Development ‘Progressing Quite Steadily’ According to Yuji Horii

Development is ongoing alongside Dragon Quest XII.

Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii states that development of Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake is “progressing quite steadily” in a new Famitsu interview. The new remake was originally announced in May 2021, and updates have been scarce in the two years leading up to the new interview.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake is one of the major projects being developed alongside Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate. As the name suggests, Dragon Quest III is being remade in the popular HD-2D engine in use in other Square Enix games such as LIVE A LIVE and Octopath Traveler. A release date has not been announced, but Horii shared a notable update with Famitsu.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Development Update

According to Horii, development of Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake is progressing quite steadily. The creator is offering advice since he was in charge of the original game’s development. However, there’s not much that Horii may specifically share about Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate’s development.

Here’s the translated excerpt via Gematsu:

Famitsu: Is your involvement in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince similar to your involvement in the Dragon Quest III in HD-2D and Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate?

Yuji Horii: “It’s roughly the same. Well, when it comes to Dragon Quest III, I already created that game once before myself and know a lot about it, so I’ll give advice along the lines of, ‘If you want to change this, you should do it this way.’”

What is the development status of Dragon Quest III in HD-2D and Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate?

Horii: “Dragon Quest III in HD-2D is progressing quite steadily. As for Dragon Quest XII, there’s still not much I can say.”

—All three titles, including Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, are quite heavily anticipated by fans of the series.

Horii: “We’re working on a variety of things, so I hope everyone can continue to look forward to them.”

Lastly, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, the latest entry in the franchise, launches December 1 for Nintendo Switch, and pre-orders are available now physically at retail and digitally via Nintendo eShop. Pre-orders include the Head Start Set featuring, Stardust Earrings x1, Scholar’s Specs x1, and Bonus Ball x5.
