Final Fantasy XVI Unveils ‘Ascension’ Story and Gameplay Trailer

Do you run, do you fight, or do you ascend?

During the Final Fantasy XVI Pre-Launch Celebration event, Square Enix released the “Ascension” story trailer for the upcoming action RPG. The new Final Fantasy XVI trailer provides another glimpse into the game’s main story with protagonist Clive Rosfield facing many challenges in his journey.

The Final Fantasy XVI Ascension trailer highlights gameplay footage featuring Clive and his various combos while using Eikonic abilities. These abilities allow Clive to chain together attacks and unleash devastating elemental damage on enemies. Final Fantasy XVI’s latest trailer also showcases the Eikons and their respective dominants, including Shiva and Jill Warrick. Players will soon be able to experience the game’s combat in a free Final Fantasy XVI demo for PlayStation 5.

The new Final Fantasy XVI demo launches on Monday, June 12 with over two hours of gameplay according to Square Enix. This new demo contains a prologue section that focuses on Clive’s teenage years in the Grand Duchy of Rosaria. After completing the demo’s prologue content, players may test their skills in a “special combat” demo featuring an older Clive and his Eikonic abilities. Prologue save data from the Final Fantasy XVI demo transfers over to the full game, but save data from the special combat demo does not transfer over.

Square Enix recently announced that PlatinumGames and the Kingdom Hearts IV team aided development of Final Fantasy XVI. PlatinumGames game designer and producer Takahisa Taura led a team to support development of Final Fantasy XVI. Moreover, Tai Yasue and the Kingdom Hearts IV team worked on the Final Fantasy XVI’s combat system. This collaboration explains why certain elements of Final Fantasy XVI’s combat system are similar to Kingdom Hearts, including Clive’s Ramuh Eikon abilities.

Before launch, fans may also enjoy the Final Fantasy XVI song “Find the Flame” on various streaming services. “Find the Flame” was composed by Masayoshi Soken, the composer for Final Fantasy XIV and Final Fantasy XVI.

Final Fantasy XVI launches on June 22 for PlayStation 5 worldwide, and a PC version will enter production after the game’s initial release.
