PlayStation 5 Sold Over 7.1 Million Units in Q3, at 32.1 Million Units Lifetime

An impressive number for the console's second year.

Sony announced in their Fiscal Year 2022 Q3 Report that the PlayStation 5 has officially sold over 32,100,000 units. In Q3 alone, the console sold 7.1 million units. This is a massive jump from the prior Q3, with that quarter having only had 3.9 million consoles sold.

In January at CES, it was confirmed that the PS5 console sold over 30 million units. These newly updated numbers add a whopping 2.1 million units to the already massive amount of consoles sold. The PS5 trajectory is very high. This is no surprise considering the strong software lineup that Sony has.

Two massive games, Final Fantasy XVI and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, are scheduled to be released in 2023. These both will be console exclusives, which will be a huge driver to sales for the 2023 fiscal year. Final Fantasy XVI is currently scheduled to be released on June 22, 2023. On the other hand, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 only has a release window, with that being Fall 2023.

    Final Fantasy XVI

This is in addition to the already strong software lineup, with titles like God of War Ragnarok and Dead Space being available on the platform. These two specifically are not console exclusive, yet they continue to be at the top of the list at the storefront. Q4 for PlayStation 5 should have plenty more units sold, especially with the strong slate of games from January to March.

It was also highlighted in the report that the PS5 had 86.5 million units of software sold. Out of that, 20.8 million copies were of first-party titles. This is, again, a huge step up from last fiscal year, with the PS5 exponentially increasing in all categories. As outlined above, there is no reason to expect this to slow down next quarter.
