Ghost in the Shell creator Shirow Masamune shared the following message for the new anime last year:

“Anime adaptation-wise, this new THE GHOST IN THE SHELL marks the fourth version following those by [Mamoru Oshii], [Kenji Kamiyama], and [Kazuchika Kise]. Alternatively, if we separate GHOST IN THE SHELL and Innocence, categorize the S.A.C. series into Seasons 1, 2, and Solid State Society, divide ARISE into its own series along with The New Movie, and split SAC_2045 into Seasons 1 and 2, this would be the tenth adaptation overall.

“Considering the shift in production staff, one could even consider this the first installment of a second generation. The original manga is quite old, so I ask for your understanding on that point (sorry!). That said, I sincerely hope this will once again be an enjoyable visual experience in some form.”

Stranger Than Heaven Preview – A Groovy New Beginning

Let’s face it: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is one of the most consistent in our industry. Sure, I’ve not felt as strong with some of the studio’s more recent games, but there is a two-decade-long track record of quality releases. You’ve got Virtua FighterSuper Monkey Ball, and, of course, Yakuza/Like a Dragon. The Like a Dragon series has drastically shifted in recent years, introducing a new protagonist in Ichiban Kasuga and a dynamic shift to turn-based combat. However, while this popular series has brought new ways to play, there’s nothing quite like the studio’s upcoming original game, Stranger Than Heaven. I had the opportunity to go hands-on with the upcoming game at Summer Game Fest 2026, and after just 40 minutes, I’m incredibly intrigued to see more.

Stranger Than Heaven follows Makoto Daito across Japan in five distinct locations and eras. These include Fukuoka in 1915, Hiroshima in 1929, Osaka in 1943, Shizuoka in 1951, and Shinjuku, Tokyo in 1965. As you progress through the game, Makoto will age, and the story will continue to deepen over the eventual founding of the Tojo Clan, a key organization very heavily involved in the Like a Dragon series.

While my preview didn’t focus on the story, I did get the chance to experience a small slice of three of these eras: 1915, 1929, and 1943. These all look wildly different and feel very authentic to the time period. Each segment threw me into a battle with a variety of enemies, with each round ramping up in difficulty. By far, the biggest change Like a Dragon veterans will encounter is the combat system. Instead of utilizing face buttons, Stranger Than Heaven gives you control of its protagonist by using both bumpers and triggers. Admittedly, this is going to take some getting used to (I constantly found myself wanting to press Square to attack), but I’m confident the system will feel natural after some more time with the game.

Stranger Than Heaven Xbox Presents

I was most surprised by Stranger Than Heaven‘s focus on defense. While the Yakuza games certainly have their fair share of mechanics like dodging or guarding, I found these to be much more intertwined with battles in Stranger Than Heaven. The final stage I was able to try involved a wandering samurai in Osaka, and that battle proved to be impossible without the use of proper blocking, parrying, and dodging. The combat feels more challenging than Like a Dragon in a good way, as you have to take into account many more inputs at once. I am curious how some players might feel about this approach, but as the combat system is brand new, I assume most will go in with an open mind.

Stagger is another key component of combat, with this meter slowly broken over time as you land more hits. Both Makoto and enemies have this gauge, and it’s one you need to watch closely. If your meter slowly starts to wind down into the Yellow or Red, your ability to react defensively to incoming attacks will be limited. Stranger Than Heaven is very focused on this idea of strategy between Stagger, defensive maneuvers, and what weapon to use where.

Speaking of, while you can fight with your bare fists, a total of 13 weapons are set to be included in the game at launch. I had the chance to spend time with both the knife and a larger two-handed weapon, and both dramatically shifted my approach to combat. I found the knife to be much easier to use when attempting to stagger an enemy and deal a heavy attack (done by simultaneously pressing both triggers), while the larger weapon had longer reach when I wanted to nail a solid blow with some distance. As you probably can tell, Stranger Than Heaven is quite a mechanic-filled game. lot is going on in gameplay, but I think the challenge will be exciting for many veterans.

Stranger Than Heaven screenshot of Kamurocho

I didn’t have a chance to see any of Stranger Than Heaven‘s music-inspired mechanics, but the UI itself for the stagger meter looks like a vinyl record. It’s interwoven throughout even combat, and I’m really excited to see how deep this influence will be, especially with such strong musical talent and the already-showcased showman mechanics.

With just my small slice of the game, Stranger Than Heaven clearly has a lot going for it. The all-star cast will be a draw for some, and its music has already spread far and wide across social media. Its combat system is a fresh experience from the rest of the Like a Dragon series, and the story set across multiple eras is quite intriguing. RGG Studio has an ambitious game on its hands, and if I had to guess based on my time with it, I think this one is shaping up to be something special.

Stranger Than Heaven is set to launch on January 15, 2027, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Preview – Stylish & Incredibly Promising

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Preview

Tomb Raider is one of the most iconic franchises in all of gaming, with Lara Croft still to this day one of the industry’s greatest icons. It’s been 8 years since the last new entry in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was released, and while we’ve gotten multiple remastered collections, fans have looked forward to what’s next for quite some time. The answer is Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, a from-the-ground-up remake of the original game almost three decades later. During Summer Game Fest: Play Days 2026, I had the chance to go hands-on with 50 minutes of the game in its iconic Lost Valley level, and overall, I’m thoroughly impressed with what I’ve seen so far.

Legacy of Atlantis is the second remake of the original game, and with that comes massive nostalgia and expectation from fans. I know some online were skeptical of how this remake might turn out, but the demo I played reassured me that this team is well aware of what Tomb Raider is and what fans want from it. Right out of the gate, it was hard not to appreciate just how visually impressive the game was. There is such a high level of detail throughout, whether in foliage, environmental assets like water, or Lara’s character model. The lighting, especially, was stunning, with some really neat filtering of sunlight done through the jungle trees.

As an earlier level in the game, The Lost Valley offered a few puzzles to complete. Lara has quite a few tools at her disposal, including a grappling hook that allows you to swing across waterfalls, pull objects, and more. I was able to use the grappling hook to pull down a gear I needed to complete a puzzle, and that process was a fun challenge. It’s been said that multiple new puzzle mechanics are being added to Legacy of Atlantis, and I’m excited to see how these end up being.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis Releases on February 10, 2027

Naturally, Legacy of Atlantis is still a linear game, but it appears that its environments will have plenty to discover off the beaten path. Hidden collectibles are available to seek throughout, in addition to a scanner that gives insight into some of the architecture and relics in the environment. As a huge fan of a good adventure story, I love that there are all sorts of things to find in the environment. You are rewarded for checking out interesting areas or walking through an unknown path. Discovery and exploration are such key parts of an adventure like Tomb Raider, and these elements greatly enhance it.

Beyond exploration, combat is a key focus that you’ll have to get familiar with throughout the adventure. Lara has her iconic dual-pistol setup, and these felt so satisfying to use. Each shot felt snappy and right in line with what I’d hope for from gunplay. My preview had me sidestepping around and firing away at dinosaurs as they lunged toward me, and I had so much fun shooting them down. It’s just an absolute blast dodging all over as Lara with flips and cartwheels as you shoot down enemies.

My favorite addition Legacy of Atlantis brings to the table is the new Focus meter. We all know Lara’s dynamic, expressive dodges, and the teams at Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog have built a mechanic around this that is genuinely exciting. As you dodge away from enemies, a small meter on the bottom left fills. Once a circle is filled in, you can tap the right bumper to enter Focus Mode, which slows down time and has Lara strike a sweet pose mid-air to shoot enemies. This addition is so much fun and, truthfully, makes combat a joy. As I dodged away from dinosaurs, I could quickly slow down time and deal massive headshot damage while upside down. It makes playing as Lara a lot of fun, and I’m looking forward to seeing how the system shapes up in the full release.

Throughout the demo, Lara had plenty of witty lines that felt right in line with what I’d expect from her character. It feels right in line with the confident Lara found in early games and films, and I’m very happy with the voice acting I heard from Alix Wilton Regan so far. I am interested to see how the cutscene direction and overall dialogue are for the rest of the game, as I enjoyed what I experienced.

I was already stoked to play Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, but after my demo, it’s instantly one of my most anticipated games of 2027. The Amazon Games team I spoke with during my preview made it clear that this experience has been built by huge fans of the series for fans, whether veterans or newcomers. The original game is still here, but some enhancements go beyond a remake here. Based on my time with the game, I think those additions are really going to pay off. The stylish gameplay and new mechanics look to make this the best version of Lara’s debut adventure, and it’s looking like that very well may be the case after spending some hands-on time with the game.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is set to launch on February 12, 2027, across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
