At Tokyo Game Show 2026, I sat down with Final Fantasy VII Revelation Director Naoki Hamaguchi after checking out the game’s latest demo. Having now played Revelation across two separate preview sessions, I wanted to use this opportunity to explore some of the topics surrounding the game beyond its narrative. So, naturally, I had to ask him about one of Final Fantasy VII‘s best references: Xenogears, and lead that into the chance we could see a modern release of some sort.
While Hamaguchi-san shared he wasn’t even aware of the reference being in Revelation (crediting both Nojima and Toriyama), he did share a few thoughts on the possibility of seeing Xenogears on modern platforms. Currently, Xenogears is not officially available on any modern platform. Xenogears was released in 1998 and has quite an interesting history within both Square Enix and the industry. The RPG was directed by Tetsuya Takahashi, who went on to create both the Xenosaga and the Xenoblade series. Check out Hamaguchi-san’s answer below:
I don’t know if you played it, but do you have any thoughts on Xenogears and potentially the possibility of that game being made playable on modern platforms, from a preservation standpoint?
NH: I do kind of remember playing it back in the day when it first came out. Remaking something that came from that era, as an experienced person who has gone through the Remake series, sounds like a tough game to make.
