Marvelous has officially terminated its partnership with Tencent, resulting in the cancellation of the previously announced Story of Seasons mobile game. The announcement comes just a month after Bloomberg reported Tencent’s plans to end its investment in Marvelous.
According to a translation from Automaton Media, “the companies ended their 6-year-long business alliance because Image Frame Investment expressed the intention to sell their Marvelous shares, following a revision of Tencent’s investment portfolio and a change in its capital allocation policy.” SEGA President and current CEO of Amuse Capital, Hayao Nakayama, is expected to become Marvelous’ largest shareholder, followed by Marvelous CEO Haruki Nakayama.
The reason for the cancellation of the Story of Seasons mobile game, announced in 2021 as simply Story of Seasons Mobile, is reportedly due to “business environment and profitability.” That said, since the license agreement itself remains effective, Tencent and Marvelous will not be completely severing their business relationship.
Tencent choosing to cease its investment in certain companies is because of “reassessment of the company’s global portfolio.” It is still evaluating its minority holdings in many studios, and is supposedly preparing to sell stakes back to the management team of certain companies, even if its at a loss. However, its investments in From Software and Platinum Games will be unaffected.
Marvelous’ most recent major game, Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion, is available now for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (Steam). Final Weapon reviewed Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion and gave it a 4 out of 5 score, noting that the game is “a worthy sequel to the original Daemon X Machina, as it improves on its predecessor in nearly every regard.”
