A sequel to the 2016 Shin Godzilla film is currently in planning, according to a new report from Bloomberg. What’s more, a sequel to 2023’s Godzilla Minus One is also in production.
While speaking about the success of Minus One, Bloomberg states that “Toho is planning a sequel for as soon as next year, plus a potential sequel to the film Shin Godzilla and a still-untitled Southeast Asia-focused project.” Currently, Toho has not yet confirmed if the reports are true.
Later this year, Shin Godzilla 4K Remaster will release in theaters on August 14. The re-release will be exclusive to North America. While Godzilla Minus One features a rageful version of the character with a far-more personal, human-filled story, Shin Godzilla is a borderline horror film. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, known for Evangelion and the other Shin movies, direct the film.
The official website describes Shin Godzilla as follows:
Something has surfaced in Tokyo Bay. As the Prime Minister of Japan pleads with the public to remain calm, a horrific creature of tremendous size makes landfall in the city, leaving death and destruction in its wake. Then it evolves. The government assembles a motley task force to combat the monster when an envoy from the US Department of State delivers a folder of classified documents. On its cover is written: “GODZILLA.”
From visionary directors Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi, Shin Godzilla offers a thrilling origin story to one of cinema’s greatest creations. Propelled by astounding visual effects and rapid fire dialogue, Shin Godzilla is equal parts pulse-pounding action film and venomous political satire, worthy of the franchise’s towering history.
