07th Expansion and Ryukishi07 announced that a new manga series titled Koppa Maichiru Sono Koro ni (When the Wood Chips Scatter) will be serialized on Akita Publishing’s Young Champion Web platform. Serialization will begin on January 31, 2025.
Cells at Work! Illegal illustrator Kōichi Tsugi will illustrate the new manga series by Ryukishi07, who is the author. Further details were not unveiled, but the Pomexgranate YouTube channel released a new trailer for the manga.

Previously, 07th Expansion released Higurashi Origin, an upgraded version of Higurashi: When They Cry with several new features and adjustments for Nintendo Switch. The visual novel includes a new “Origin” reading mode, sprite switching, Mehagashi-hen from Hou+ with new voice acting and sprites, and more. Lines for the visual novel were recorded for the new Origin reading mode, allowing for a more cohesive experience throughout Higurashi: When They Cry.
When They Cry is 07th Expansion’s main franchise with several series including Higurashi, Umineko, and Ciconia. Ryukishi07 is the creator of the When They Cry franchise and serves as its main writer. His resume includes more than just When They Cry and 07th Expansion, however. Ryukishi07’s other works include visual novels Okami Kakushi and Loopers, which were published by Konami and Prototype respectively.
Ryukishi07 is currently working on Silent Hill f, a brand-new game developed by Neobards Entertainment (Resident Evil Re:Verse). The game features a completely new story set in 1960’s Japan. A release date and platforms for Silent Hill f were not announced, however.
