Cave Story Creator Shares 20th Anniversary Art and Message

The developer urges people to look forward to future developments.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Cave Story, developer Nicalis Inc. posted a video message from Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, the creator of the game, on X (formerly Twitter). The video is very short, and features the creator reminscing on how he went from coding printer drivers to making game development his career.

At the end of the video however, he asks for fans to “look forward to future developments”, and wishes a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, holding a special illustration he drew to celebrate the game’s anniversary. It is unknown what exactly this entails, but we’ll keep our ears to the ground whenever any of those developments arise.

Cave Story is a 2004 Metroidvania platform-adventure video game originally released for Microsoft Windows. It was developed over five years by Japanese independent developer Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya in his free time.

The story revolves around Quote, a robot who wakes up suffering from amnesia and explores in diverse cavernous areas in order to uncover his backstory and escape from the cave. As he gains access to new areas, Quote powers up his weapons by collecting triangular experience crystals and solves various platforming puzzles. Players can also speak to the many characters scattered around the world in order to learn more about it and its inhabitants.

An enhanced port titled Cave Story+ was later released in November 2011 on PC via Steam, containing all the additional modes from the WiiWare version released in 2010, a remastered soundtrack, the option to toggle between various graphical styles, and an exclusive level.
